"William F. Buckley has an interesting and decidedly gloomy piece in National Review Online concerning Republican prospects and the prospects of success against terrorism. ( author.nationalreview.com/latest/?q=MjE0Ng== ) Though I am reluctant to argue against a man who is both brilliant and one of the founders of modern conservatism, a man I've shaken hands with in the past, I must say that his thought processes stopped before they reached the conclusion to which they aimed.

'General Petraeus is a wonderfully commanding figure. But if the enemy is in the nature of a disease, he cannot win against it. Students of politics ask then the derivative question: How can the Republican party, headed by a president determined on a war he can't see an end to, attract the support of a majority of the voters?
