"The military establishment at the highest levels has become so politicized that the men we rely upon to plan and fight our wars with the aim being victory have become politically-sensitive 'intellectuals' and have quite simply forgotten what it means to be a soldier. Counter-insurgency has become another name for Limited War which is another name for a lack of will. In truth, the modern general like the modern politician like the modern simply can no longer stomach war as war. But the best brake on man's inclinations to resolve differences by war is to insist that when war is the only alternative, it must be fought ruthlessly and with a single minded focus to destroy the enemy's ability to wage war of any kind. War is an ugly affair and it must by necessity remain so. When it is sanitized it effectively is turned on the sanitizer as a corruption of the very basis for war in the first instance."
