The Road to Serfdom By Caroline B. Glick

"In Israel, as in the rest of the free world, we are witnessing the death by a thousand cuts of free thought.
Last month, two students at Cambridge University's Clare College became victims of this state of affairs. The students dedicated an edition of their satire magazine to the one-year anniversary of the global Muslim riots which followed the publication of caricatures of Muhammad in the Danish Jyllands Posten newspaper. As the students recalled, those riots led to the deaths of more than a hundred people.

U.S. billionaire investor George Soros makes a speech at the opening ceremony of the World Knowledge Forum 2006 in Seoul October 18, 2006. REUTERS/You Sung-Ho (SOUTH KOREA) Although the British media refused to republish the caricatures, British Muslims held terrifying protests throughout the country where they called for the destruction of Britain, the US, Denmark and Israel and for the murder of all who refuse to accept the global domination of Islam.
In their magazine, the students published some of the caricatures and mocked the Muslims for their hypocrisy in accusing British society of racial prejudice while calling for its violent destruction.
The Muslim reaction was apparently swift. Fearing for their lives, the students were forced into hiding.
But the Muslims were not alone in their anger. Clare College set up a special disciplinary court to consider action against the students. And the Cambridgeshire police opened a criminal investigation against them in late February. "

Grassroots Conservatism Movement Is International By Don Laigle

"The communist anthem 'Internationale' reminds us that, at least since the beginning of the 20th Century, internationalism has been invariably associated with the Left, and hence, many of us on the right are wary of all things foreign, as well we can be in view of who is behind internationalism and 'diversity.'
Actually, that makes sense on the surface, because one would expect diverse peoples to have little in common with each other and not to be completely comfortable in each others' company, unless of course, they were united in a singular struggle. Conservatism is by definition, a kind of tabla rasa or blank slate. A conservative government has no particular flavor. It is plain vanilla. Instead of setting a theme or tone, it provides the people with the opportunity to set the tone themselves, each in his individual way according to his culture. And that is really the beauty of conservative small government.
But lately a genie has been struggling hard to get out of the bottle, and that genie is a movement that could be called the 'international conservative movement,' or at least, the 'international freedom movement.' Recall that many nations in the world today were only provinces or independent regions until a common enemy emerged to threaten them—such as Greek states like Sparta, which were sovereign nations until the Persian Empire, under King Xerxes, invaded Greece and destroyed Athens."

Satan, Islamic Terrorists, and The Democrats Are Out And About by Marie Jon'

"All human beings are in one way or another involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan. God's sovereignty over the universe was put into question a long time ago by a willful defector. The conflict began in heaven when Satan, a created being, was given freedom of choice and squandered it.

Unfortunately, self-exaltation overtook the highest created being's own downfall. His name was Lucifer. At one time he was a prominent archangel in heaven. He is, to this day, the most beautiful looking fallen angel. He is not the evil looking creature people perceive him to be. 'If it were possible, Lucifer would deceive even the most elect.' (Mark 13:22 )
He became taken up with self-pride and desperately wanted power. Lucifer became God's adversary. He led other angels into rebellion. Lucifer introduced sin into this world when he led Adam and Eve to disobey God.
Sin resulted because of this rebellion that began with Beelzebub, known familiarly as the devil, the great liar and deceiver. He willfully tried to distort the image of God before humanity. Thus, the world became the arena for universal conflict. The God of love has been vindicated because of our Savior, Jesus Christ."

The Valiant Word Warriors: Roggio, Totten, and Yon::Gates Of Vienna

UPDATE: Colonel Boyd is rolling over in his grave. The generals are trying to wreak their ignorant havoc on a system that is running well without them. Maybe that’s what fuels this latest hubrstic hissy fit.

Austin Bay has the story here.

It seems that Michael Yon is being hassled by the brass - they are threatening once again to kick him out of Iraq. And it’s not the first time. Here’s AB’s report on his experience in the matter:

This is stupid. Michael Yon and Bill Roggio are the best out there. Telling Michael Yon to exit the theater is the WWII equivalent of telling Ernie Pyle to quit filing dispatches.

Everyone knows the PAO system has never been much more than mediocre — I’ve met some very smart public affairs officers and non-coms, but the system is inadequate, at times inept. Now Yon says someone wants to kick him out of Iraq. Tut. At a Pentagon lunch last fall General Pace mentioned to me the importance of milblogs. I then told him the word circulating the blogosphere was that the Army wanted to limit milblogs. Yes, there is an OPSEC argument, but read the milblogs. The soldiers posting know about OPSEC.Pace told me he would look into the rumor. No, I never heard back.[emphasis mine -- D]

I suggest that General Pace look into this report from Yon.

I second the suggestion. As Colonel Boyd would say to his protegĂ©s, “do you want to do something, or do you just want to be a general?” Which is just one of the reasons that Colonel Boyd remained a colonel. But his strategy and tactics will remain pertinent to the conduct of war for generations to come. Meanwhile, pissy generals continue to throw their weight around and then, damage done, they will be gone...sans accountability. ‘Twas ever thus.

Bad Writing And Journalism Would Make Reagan Cry Too By Pejman Yousefzadeh

Karen Tumulty is the latest journalist to pronounce the death of conservatism. Like many deaths, this one is greatly exaggerated.

Read on . . .

A generation ago, fresh off the second biggest electoral landslide in American history, Ronald Reagan surveyed the wreckage that had been the opposition and declared victory. Standing before 1,700 true believers at the 1985 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), he proclaimed, "The tide of history is moving irresistibly in our direction. Why? Because the other side is virtually bankrupt of ideas. It has nothing more to say, nothing to add to the debate. It has spent its intellectual capital." At this year's conference two weeks ago, Reagan's name was invoked more than anyone else's. But the mood at the most storied annual gathering of conservatives was anything but triumphal. John McCain, the Establishment favorite to win the 2008 Republican nomination, skipped CPAC entirely but did show up on David Letterman the night before, choosing the most aggressively glib venue to semiofficially announce his candidacy. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was there to make his pitch for 2008 but had to compete with a man who was working the crowd in a dolphin costume and a T-shirt identifying him as "Flip Romney: Just another flip flopper from Massachusetts." Ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani barely mentioned the social issues on which he parts ways with conservatives, except to joke, "I don't agree with myself on everything." And the only memorable sound bite of the whole affair came from right-wing telepundit Ann Coulter, whose idea of an ideological rallying cry was to declare Democratic hopeful John Edwards a [EXPLETIVE DELETED]. The condemnation that followed, in which at least seven newspapers banished her column from their opinion pages, became a ragged coda for the state of a movement that had once been justly proud of its ability to win an argument.

Understand that Tumulty has pronounced conservatism dead because (a) McCain didn't show up at CPAC, (b) Romney was trailed by a dolphin, (c) Giuliani made a self-deprecating joke and (d) Ann Coulter was her typical, loudmouthed self. And of course, she cannot resist noting that Coulter's comment is somehow a "coda" for conservatism, the condemnation issued by conservatives--an example of which can be found here--notwithstanding. This is journalism?

Democrats Fear Fred Thompson--and They Should By Mark Alexander

"Beyond the field of announced GOP candidates with questionable conservative pedigrees, there is a potential suitor on the horizon who could close the wide breach between Republicans and conservatives. Fred Thompson, the former Republican senator from Tennessee, is perhaps America's brightest and most capable prospect for president in 2008.
Most folks probably recognize him as District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's 'Law & Order,' or maybe from one of his big-screen roles like 'Clear and Present Danger,' but I have had the privilege of knowing him for 20 years as just Fred. I know well that he is as capable of navigating the clear and present dangers facing our nation and restoring law and order to our constitutional republic as are the characters he plays on screen.
Last week, when Sen. Thompson was queried about a possible presidential bid, he replied, 'I'm giving some thought to it,' saying he would make a decision in coming months. 'It's not really a reflection on the current field at all. I'm just going to wait and see what happens.'
Notwithstanding his tip of the hat to the current field of GOP contenders, Thompson made it clear that he would be watching them: 'I wanted to see how my colleagues who are on the campaign trail do now--what they say, what they emphasize--and whether or not they can carry the ball next November.' The Next Conservatism: A retrospective by Paul Weyrich

"This is the fiftieth essay in our Next Conservatism series and it is a good point to look back at the road we have traveled. When we began this series we were thinking we might write a dozen essays on where the conservative movement needs to go. Now we are at fifty essays and still counting; we have no intention of stopping here. Why not? Mainly because of the overwhelming response from people who see the need for something new if conservatism is to deal with the problems of the twenty-first century.

The Next Conservatism is not yet a movement but it may be on its way to becoming one. The February 12 issue of THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE carried the Next Conservatism as its cover story in a piece we co-authored. Three other leading conservative thinkers offered their comments in the same issue. None was really hostile.

We are also getting growing interest in the Next Conservatism from Capitol Hill. Senators and Members of Congress are coming to see that the supposed conservatism of the Republican Party is inadequate both intellectually and politically. It neither motivates the grassroots nor comes to grips with the problems facing our country.

We are now talking with a leading conservative publisher about writing a book on the Next Conservatism. Despite all the new media, at a certain point a movement needs a book. Nothing else works for laying out a program and a plan. Somehow, we find the continued importance of books comforting."

What If Homosexuality Is Biological? By Selwyn Duke

"R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., recently penned an article that has both fellow evangelicals and homosexual activists feeling none too gay. Mohler raised the ire of the former group by stating that science may very well prove there is a biological basis for homosexuality; he then sent the latter group into a tizzy by reasserting that homosexual behavior is sinful and that modern science may offer prenatal remedies for it.

That homosexuality may have a basis in biology is rejected by many on the right for the same reason it is embraced by homosexuals. The reasoning is that if such feelings are biologically induced, then homosexual behavior is neither sinful nor a choice. Thus, the genesis of same-sex attraction has become a locus of debate in the culture war. The truth is, however, that both sides have fallen victim to a misconception, one I have long wanted to dispel.

Any biological basis for homosexuality would only be relevant insofar as preventing the condition is concerned; it has no bearing on morality. This is for a very simple reason: Biology doesn't determine morality.

Think about it. Many of the same people who tell us homosexuality is inborn also claim that sociopaths (those without consciences and who exhibit antisocial behavior) may be born and not made. But, if this is true, would that render it moral for these individuals to trample the rights of others? If one is born with homicidal instincts, would it be licit for him to commit murder? Don't scoff, for it's precisely the same reasoning. Either morality is dictated by biology or it isn't."

Can the Amnesty Juggernaut Be Stopped? By Christopher Adamo

"For those who accept the “wisdom” from inside the Beltway, amnesty for the twelve million or more illegal aliens presently in our homeland is inevitable. In the U.S. Senate, both parties have seemed intent on a repeat of last year’s amnesty bill, while the White House, remaining stubbornly oblivious to the anger generated among its most loyal base, remains fixed on an agenda of placating the Mexican government and selling out the American people on this issue.

Yet despite incessant reporting of this supposed “done deal,” some very encouraging signs from the heartland attest to the fact that the debate is far from over.

Out on the campaign trail, ordinary citizens who recognize their country’s future as a far loftier goal than the acquisition of cheap labor (among Republicans) or cheap votes (the real motivation of the Democrats), are forcefully conveying to the slate of presidential hopefuls that they consider amnesty for illegals to be nothing less than a betrayal of the country."

Fred Thompson in 2008! by Doug Hagin

"Are you a Conservative? Are you tired out and beaten down by the lack of real Conservatism in the modern day Republican Party? Did you just refuse to vote for GOP candidates in the 2006 elections? Maybe you voted while holding your nose, because as bad as many Republicans are, you realize the Democrats are even worse. Are you worn out by supporting a political party that increasingly refuses to honor your support? Do you wish Ronald Reagan would resurrect himself and run again?
If you answered yes to any or maybe all of these questions then do I have great news for you! There IS a presidential candidate true Conservatives can support. Moreover, I mean support while smiling proudly rather than holding their noses. Who is the candidate that you, yes you, Mr. or Ms. Conservative can gleefully vote for in November 2008?
Well, it is certainly not John McCain, with his increasingly Liberal voting record on social issues. And no, it is not Mr. Infidelity Rudy Guliani either. I mean let us face it, Rudy, is about as Conservative as your average Democrat is. And no kids, it is not even Mitt “Look at my Hair” Romney.
No my friends, the man who you should start supporting now, as in today, is a man of character, a man of true Conservative values. He IS pro-life! He IS anti gun control! He WILL be strong in the war on terror. He WILL be pro tax-cuts and WILL fight big spending. He WILL get tougher on the border, and by golly when asked a question he will answer it, as a leader should!"

Dazzling new images reveal the 'impossible' on the Sun

The restless bubbling and frothing of the Sun's chaotic surface is astonishing astronomers who have been treated to detailed new images from a Japanese space telescope called Hinode.
The observatory will have as dramatic an impact on our understanding of the Sun as the Hubble Space Telescope has had on our view of the universe beyond, scientists told a NASA press conference in Washington, DC, US, on Wednesday.
"Everything we thought we knew about X-ray images of the Sun is now out of date," says Leon Golub from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. "We've seen many new and unexpected things. For that reason alone, the mission is already a success."
Hinode (Japanese for "sunrise") was launched in September 2006 to study the solar magnetic field and how magnetic energy is released as the field rises into the Sun's outer atmosphere. The mission was formerly known as Solar-B.

The World Congress of Families by Allan C. Carlson

As “demographic winter” descends over Europe, plunging birthrates coincide with heavy immigration, primarily from Muslim lands. Following the logic of Mark Steyn’s America Alone, many conservatives have largely written off “old Europe” as a lost cause.

This is unfortunate, for two reasons. First, courageous pro-family champions and organizations exist in every European country, even in hotbeds of militant secularism such as France, Sweden, and Spain. Second, several recent members of the European Union have elected strong pro-family governments, notably Latvia, Slovakia, and Poland. Despite intense pressures from EU bureaucrats in Brussels, these countries have implemented innovative programs to support natural families, grounded in marriage and welcoming towards children.

To encourage these developments, the World Congress of Families will hold its fourth Congress (WCF IV) in Warsaw, Poland, May 11-13. “If Europe is lost to demographic winter and radical secularism, much of the world will go with it” reasoned the WCF IV planning committee. “Poland saved Europe before,” by lifting the Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683 and helping to demolish the Soviet empire three centuries later. “It is likely she will save Europe again,” the committee concluded. And so, it resolved to convene this congress “among the brave people of Poland.”

Yes, the Next Reagan By Bruce Walker

Two months ago, I wrote an article, “The Next Reagan,” in which I outlined many of the reasons why Fred Thompson will be the next Ronald Reagan. Events since then have confirmed my arguments. I predict that Fred Thompson will enter the Republican nomination, that he will win it fairly easily, and that he will also defeat Hillary comfortably in the presidential election. Why?

First, no Republican since Ronald Reagan draws remotely as much genuine enthusiasm among conservatives as a serious presidential candidate. Both of the Bush presidencies have been mild disappointments. Though respect for our current commander-in-chief is high, President Bush is simply not an effective communicator or articulator of conservative principles. President Bush, however, is light years ahead of Senator Dole, the 1996 nominee, and also better as a communicator and campaigner than his father. That is how bad things have been for conservatives since the Gipper left the White House.

Fred Thompson, in stark contrast, is a phenomenal communicator. His background as a film and television star combines perfectly with his background as a very persuasive trial lawyer so that he is not only comfortable in front of the camera or at the microphone, but his skills in rhetoric are unequaled in any major political figure since Senator Robert Taft over fifty years ago.

Why Does the ACLU Think Sexual Predators Have More Rights than Children? By Jay Sekulow

In a recent series of cases in New Jersey, the ACLU has opposed legitimate efforts to protect children from sexual predators who attempt to live in their neighborhoods. The ACLJ is now representing the Township of Galloway, New Jersey, in the defense of an important law designed to protect children against convicted sex offenders. Not surprisingly, the ACLU has filed a lawsuit claiming that the ordinance designed to protect children violates several of New Jersey’s constitutional provisions.

The Township of Galloway, like many other communities in New Jersey, enacted Ordinance No. 1616 to serve as a buffer zone for children, forbidding convicted sex offenders (over age 18) from residing within 2500 feet of any school, park, playground or day care center in Galloway Township. This kind of stay-away zone makes sense.

It’s Almost Official…Fred Thompson Could Be the New Ron Reagan! by JB Williams

Liberal cheeks are puckering all over this country, including at RNC headquarters, at the prospects of a Fred Thompson presidential campaign. The last good-ole-boy conservative actor turned presidential candidate became the most universally beloved US President of the 20th century!
In my own unofficial not-so-scientific regular reader poll, which asked my mostly conservative regular reader mail list one simple question, Who would you feel best about supporting for President in 2008?, the answer could not have been clearer…
Fred Thompson - 43%
Newt Gingrich – 17%
Duncan Hunter – 10%
Rudy Giuliani – 10%
Ron Paul – 8%
John McCain – 6%
Mitt Romney – 4%
Tom Tancredo – 3%
Sam Brownback – 0%
I can only guess why the results are what they are. But my readers are not alone in their search for an unapologetic no-nonsense plain-spoken conservative leader who shares their conservative values.
After six years of “compassionate conservatism”, which turns out to be more compassionate than conservative, the conservative core of the Republican Party seems finally in the mood to force a seismic shift in party leadership, from recent liberal RINO control back to the conservative values that founded and built not only the Grand Ole Party, but this nation.

Fredheads, or Those Who Would LIke to Draft Fred Thompson By Lisa Fabrizio

It seems as though the movement to draft Fred Thompson into the 2008 presidential race is gaining steam. The appearance of the former Tennessee senator, lawyer, and actor on Fox News Sunday a few weeks ago has re-energized the right in a way that no one else in the race has come close to doing. Why? Because he is truly one of us and because he can win.
Think of the assets touted by Rudy Giuliani’s followers--that he’s a tax-cutting, small government, fiscal conservative who’s tough on crime and terrorism. Thompson is all of these, plus he is free of the liberal baggage that front-running Rudy drags around like a ball and chain while campaigning in the red states.
Although Mitt Romney and Rudy make promises about nominating originalist justices to the Supreme Court, Thompson actually has practical experience, having been named by President Bush to shepherd John Roberts through the minefield that is the modern nomination process. He succeeded spectacularly, securing 78 votes while peeling off half of the Senate Democrats in favor of Roberts’s confirmation.

Fred Thompson for President 2008 / We need leadership! - Conservative Beach Girl

The time has come. We need LEADERSHIP that honors the oath of office - defends the United States from invasion. If you don't know we are being invaded, you've been sleeping; or you know and you are so ashamed of your own nation that you want the destruction of our national sovereignty.

We need clearly articulated goals and objectives; we need our men and women of the Border Patrol to do their best and hold the line for just another year and a half without getting themselves in jail for doing their job. We need the DEA, ATF, and all the other alphabet soup agencies to hold the line and do their best to avoid continuing the march to make law-abiding American citizens the "enemy".

Our government has and continues to sell us out - can you say NAFTA, SPP (Security and Prosperity Partnership a treaty by any definition without Senatorial review or approval), and the other measures to destroy our national sovereignty. Ever wonder why our borders are open coming into the United States but Mexico sure doesn't have "open" borders so that we can cross and take up residence there.....

American Thinker: Progressive? By Henry P. Wickham, Jr.

It is time to drop from our political vocabulary the once useful word 'progressive.' When not deceptive, it is meaningless. It is a word that pretends to be descriptive and informative when it is more often an impediment to thought. When used as self-description, it is inevitably self-congratulation.

Progressive in its more general sense means advancing or making progress. It means increasing or developing, usually in a positive sense. When used in a political context, there is often a connotation of reform and improvement. Advertisers could not have come up with a more attractive label for one with a political agenda.

There was a time in our history when the positive connotations of this word as description of certain political policies were reasonably merited. When African-Americans were suffering the woes of Jim Crow laws and the bigotry that spawned them, efforts to end these conditions were certainly progressive.

Recognition that a functioning democratic republic must have an educated citizenry once led to a broadening of educational opportunities. Concurrent with these growing educational opportunities was a gradual opening of the political process. Candidates began to be chosen in primary elections rather than anointed in backroom deals. There was increased enforcement of voting rights for the disenfranchised. All of these developments could be fairly called progress, and those who advocated them, progressive.

The War in America Against Israel (part one) By Richard Baehr

"Like a new Broadway show testing the waters in New Haven or Boston before hitting the bright lights of New York, an anti-Israel media crusade is going through its warm up numbers in preparation for two big June events. Those upcoming showcases are the trial of former AIPAC employees Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman for allegedly passing on classified information to journalists and Israel, and the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War of early June 1967.

American support for Israel

America has been Israel's one unshakeable ally. With European nations in the Palestinians' corner, the pressure by Israel's enemies to shake America loose from Israel has picked up steam in recent years. If America abandoned Israel or weakened its ties, the assumption is that the Arabs and Palestinians will then no longer have to defeat Israel militarily. Rather the Israelis will feel more isolated and insecure, and begin to leave for safer pastures in droves. Then, Israel will make fatal political concessions or be pressured into them, and the Jewish state will disappear.

The Muslim Assault on Germany By Paul R. Hollrah

In the small village of Hahlen, in the German State of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), church records from the 4th and 5th centuries indicate the presence of a family named “Hole den Rahen,” (“Hole” meaning, “give me,” and “den rahen” meaning “the fields” or “meadows”). Hence, the early German name “Holrahen,” meaning, “give me new land.”

Through the centuries the name was shortened to “Holrahe” and later to “Holrah.” A spelling error by either a quartermaster or a paymaster during the American Civil War added an additional “l” to the middle of the name, and it has been “Hollrah” ever since.

I only mention the roots of my family name because it can be traced back to a time in northwestern Germany at least a hundred years before the Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca, in northern Arabia, in the year 570 AD.

The lands that my Saxon forbears occupied were marshy and not suitable for cultivation. Huge peat bogs stretched for miles, but the industrious Saxons cleared the arable lands and drained the marshes, using drainage canals and terracing. My people have been living on those lands for more than 1,500 years, since before Muhammad was born, and now his followers want to take it away from them.

One farm, near the village of Menslage, has been in my family, continuously, since the year 1245. I have visited those places on two occasions and on each visit I have been overwhelmed by the thought of my great-great-grandfather and my 10-year-old great-grandfather walking away from their home, with only the clothes on their backs and their few possessions in hand, seeking a better life in America.

Germany is the seat of the Protestant Reformation, and with the exception of the years that encompass the Nazi era of the 1930s and 40s, and the years of communist domination of East Germany during the Cold War, Germany has always been a devoutly Christian nation. Moreover, no nation has contributed more to the arts, to science, to religion, to philosophy, to the expansion of human knowledge, than have the Germans.

Muslim "Extremists", School Buses, and our Children By Dave Gaubatz

We are told by the FBI that "extremists" have been identified who have acquired licenses to drive school buses and others have attempted to actually acquire school buses. We are told neither if these "extremists" are Muslims nor where they might be located. But, we are assured by the FBI that there is no plot underway; no reason for any concern. Just to be "smarter"!

On 18 Mar 2006, the FBI released a statement to the media, after informing state and local officials, advising:

* Extremists are driving school buses;

* There is no need to fear an attack and we can rest assured of our safety; and

* There are no indications the extremists who drive the school buses are involved in a terrorist plot against our homeland.

Let’s examine this “advisory”.

The first point to be made is that if you go to the FBI or Homeland Security websites, you will not find any news of this important advisory. If it exists somewhere on these websites, it is buried deep. It appears no where on the home page, no where on the advisory page, and no where on the press page of their respective sites. Apparently, it was enough to send it to the Associated Press which distributed it to the other media outlets.

To the substance. Here is the heart of the story as reported by most outlets:

Declare war on MS-13 By Joseph Farah WorldNetDaily

One of the major cop-outs in the illegal immigration debate is this: There are millions and millions of foreigners already here. It would be an overwhelming task to find and deport them all.

Let me suggest a good starting point – an all-out declaration of war on the organized criminal street gang MS-13, comprised mostly of illegal aliens and now threatening the lives and quality of life of nearly all Americans nationwide.

Just last week, for instance, the Washington Post reported three leaders of the Mara Salvatrucha participated in or planned four murders in the area during a span of two years, according to a federal prosecutor in a racketeering trial involving the terrorist gang.

Attorney James Trusty told the court MS-13 gang members abide by the ethos "rape, kill and control." He said they use guns, knives and machetes.

"This gang works together locally, nationally, even internationally," said Trusty.

MS-13 was a little-known band of miscreants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala five years ago – hardly known to the general public. But a reign of murderous terror waged across the country has made it infamous.

You want a place to start the battle against illegal aliens? MS-13 is a priority. These are not farmworkers. These are not gardeners. These are not cheap construction workers or meatpackers. These are murderers and rapists.

2008: The Battle for a Generation By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

HILLARY CLINTON is about the last major Democrat from the left-wing of her generation capable of taking on her generation's right-wing for the presidency. The year 2008 will witness Hillary and her fellow opportunistic 1960s student protesters known as the Coat and Tie Radicals campaigning against the young conservatives who in the late 1960s were dismissed as negligible but a decade later manned the Reagan Revolution. It is going to be an epochal match-up and a very bitter one.

Though the generation that fought World War II is called the "Greatest Generation," the 1960s generation is the most momentous political generation of the 20th century. Now its left and right are squaring off for one last battle to claim title to their generation. Whoever triumphs, it will be as memorable a victory as Franklin Roosevelt's defeat of President Herbert Hoover or as Ronald Reagan's victory over President Jimmy Carter. What will make it even more momentous is that Hillary now represents the political heritage of liberalism that Roosevelt began. Though in the Clintons' hands that liberalism has been disfigured, Hillary embodies an Old Order that is desperate for victory. The looming battle between the two wings of the 1960s generation -- one championing the Roosevelt heritage, the Old Order, the other championing the Reagan heritage, a New Order -- explains much of the bitterness of contemporary politics.

Europe and Islam By Bernard Lewis

My topic this evening is Europe and Islam. But let me begin with a word of personal explanation. You are accustomed for the most part to hearing from people with direct practical involvement in military and intelligence matters. I cannot offer you that. My direct involvement with military and intelligence matters ended quite a long time ago--to be precise, on 31 August 1945, when I left His Majesty's Service and returned to the university to join with colleagues in trying to cope with a six-year backlog of battle-scarred undergraduates.

What I would like to try and offer you this evening is something of the lessons of history. Here I must begin with a second disavowal. It is sometimes forgotten that the content of history, the business of the historian, is the past, not the future. I remember being at an international meeting of historians in Rome during which a group of us were sitting and discussing the question: should historians attempt to predict the future? We batted this back and forth. This was in the days when the Soviet Union was still alive and well. One of our Soviet colleagues finally intervened and said, "In the Soviet Union, the most difficult task of the historian is to predict the past."

I do not intend to offer any predictions of the future in Europe or the Middle East, but one thing can legitimately be expected of the historian, and that is to identify trends and processes - to look at the trends in the past, at what is continuing in the present, and therefore to see the possibilities and choices which will face us in the future.

Dems' Unconstitutional Plot to Invent New Congressmen by Mac Johnson

By posting Congressman Mike Pence's response to our criticism of his appalling support in favor of a vote in the House of Representatives for the District of Columbia, HUMAN EVENTS in no way meant to imply that we were supportive of the vote he had cast. We are totally opposed to it. Here's more conservative condemnation of Pence's action.

Right now, in the guise of a civil rights issue, the new Congress is attempting one of the most brazenly unconstitutional power grabs in our nation’s history. The move aims to create a new class of congressman and simply add the first of these to the 435 existing members of the United States House of Representatives.

This design will dilute the legitimate representation of the 50 states and create a dangerous precedent that, if allowed to stand, will make it legal for the federal government to alter the constitutionally defined makeup of the Congress itself with nothing more than a simple law, bypassing the required constitutional amendment process, which requires a two-thirds supermajority in Congress followed by the approval of three-fourths of the individual dtates.

Osama bin Laden is alive and well and living within the Valley of Dir, where he is planning the American Hiroshima By Paul L. Williams Ph.D.

Let's face it. He shouldn't be hard to find, especially from a Predator, an aerial reconnaissance vehicle that can read the minute hands of a wristwatch from an altitude of twenty-six thousand feet.

Bin Laden is very tall (slightly over 6'6") and incredibly thin (less than 150 pounds). He wears shalwart kameez (the loose-fitting tunics and baggy pants of al Qaeda and Taliban soldiers) and, when the weather is cold, he dons a camouflage jacket. Although he was born in 1957 and is far from retirement age, the Al Qaeda chieftain appears to be very old. His long scraggly beard is pure white; his face is lined with countless wrinkles; and his shoulders are hunched and rounded. He is bent forward to such a degree that he seems to suffer from a form of osteoporosis. He is left-handed and walks with a cane. Last week, on March 10, he celebrated his 50th birthday.

Osama is almost always surrounded by fawning attendants who hail him not as Sultan bin Laden or Emir bin Laden but rather as "awaited enlightened one," the title reserved for the Mahdi."

Anchor Babies Used as Human Shields

"Much has been written recently about the New York Times editorial describing an ICE raid that apprehended illegal immigrants working in Boston. The Times editorial claims that, 'A screaming baby girl has been forcibly weaned from breast milk and taken, dehydrated, to an emergency room, so that the nation's borders will be secure (March 15, 2007).'

This editorial has fired up the debate about just how reliable the left-leaning New York Times is in reporting the news. We should not, however, be diverted from the story about the ICE raids and the arrest of the employer who hired these illegal immigrants, most of them women. If we dwell on the alleged misrepresentation in the editorial, and make that the story, then we miss the real story. That real story is the ever increasing use of children and anchor babies as human shields by illegal immigrants.

International law considers the use of human shields to protect targets a war crime. Nevertheless, human shields have been used by the Iraqis during the first Gulf War. The Israeli Defense Forces claim that Hezbollah and Hamas used human shields to stop the IDF from shooting at gunmen and rocket launchers. Now, illegal immigrant women are using their children as human shields to prevent their deportation from the United States."

The Islamic Intimidation of America Has Begun

"Remember those six imams who were escorted off a plane because of their bizarre behavior? Does everyone remember that these supposed Islamic holy men were moving around the plane, taking up the same positions as the 9/11 highjackers?

Have people forgotten that these men, none of whom appeared overweight, requested seat-belt extensions which they reportedly rolled up and placed under their seats? Have these men explained why they had very little luggage and one way tickets? Has anyone explained to them that praising bin Laden and Saddam Hussein might make their fellow travelers uncomfortable?

The simple fact seems to be that the actions of these imams was carefully planned in advance for maximum effect knowing that they would be taken off the plane. There can be no other logical explanation for their behavior. When the loud praying to Allah and praising of Saddam and condemnation of President Bush in the airport wasn’t enough, they boarded the plane and their actions became even stranger. These men were pushing limits to see how much they could do before someone stopped them. "

Discrediting the Family as an Institution: THE BIG PICTURE - FaultLine USA

Why our public schools are circumventing parental authority – encouraging students to lie to their parents – and are attempting to destroy the very fabric of family and society. . .

It’s amazing to me – absolutely amazing - that, according to Google, less than 400 blogs have even covered the story of Deerfield High School, and it’s been almost a full day since the last news coverage of this issue.

Summary: Deerfield High School freshman students are required to attend a Gay-Straight Alliance Network panel discussion led by "gay" and "lesbian" upper classmen promoting the homosexual agenda. No alternative viewpoint is presented. Students are also required to sign a “Confidentiality Agreement” that they will not reveal the content of this course to their parents.

The criminalization of politics By Tom DeLay

It was Winston Churchill who once said, “In war a man dies only once, but in politics many times.” No one who enters public office is surprised by this anymore. Political leadership has always been tantamount to painting a target on your back, and this is even more the case in our media-driven, “inside story”-addicted generation. Only a fool would step on the public stage today without expecting every detail of his life to be exposed, debated, and criticized. This is simply the price of leadership in our time.

There is something else happening today, though, that must come to an end if this country is going to have serious leaders at its helm. Today it is not enough to defeat a man politically. It is not even enough to vilify him publicly. You have to carpet bomb his life. You have to make sure that he leaves office disgraced, bankrupt, and heading for jail. You have to ruin him in every way, and then dance on his grave. This is what the political left in this country has brought us, and this is why many of the best leaders in our land refuse to take public office. They are willing to be scarred in political battle, but they are not willing to subject themselves to total destruction.

Derbyshire on homosexuality By Lawrence Auster

In John Derbyshire’s latest shift to the left (and how those shifts have multiplied since he came out as an atheist a few months ago), the former scourge of the homosexuals and bĂȘte noire of Andrew Sullivan now says that homosexuality is not a problem for society, with the single exception of the armed forces.
So now two regulars at NRO, senior editor Ramesh Ponnuru and John Derbyshire (who is even afforded his own “Derb Radio” page at the NRO site to spread his liberal and atheist ideas), pretty much have the bases of homosexual liberation covered. Ponnuru says homosexuality should be accepted in the U.S. military. Derbyshire says it should be accepted it in the rest of society.

I exposed Ponnuru’s readiness to surrender to the homosexual agenda regarding same sex “marriage” in 2003. I also showed how he took the liberal position that all conservative arguments against same sex marriage were bigoted. Ponnuru and Jonah Goldberg protested my characterization of Ponnuru’s position, but if you read the entire thread, particularly my reply to Goldberg, you will see that their defense falls apart.

Victor Victorians. A lesson in real morality BY Mark Steyn

'William Wilberforce,'' writes Eric Metaxas in Amazing Grace, "was the happy victim of his own success. He was like someone who against all odds finds the cure for a horrible disease that's ravaging the world, and the cure is so overwhelmingly successful that it vanquishes the disease completely. No one suffers from it again -- and within a generation or two no one remembers it ever existed.''
What did Wilberforce ''cure''? Two centuries ago, on March 25, 1807, one very persistent British backbencher secured the passage by parliament of an Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade throughout His Majesty's realms and territories. It's not that no one remembers the disease ever existed, but that we recall it as a kind of freak pandemic -- a SARS or bird flu that flares up and whirs round the world and is then eradicated. The American education system teaches it as such -- as a kind of wicked perversion the Atlantic settlers had conjured out of their own ambition. In reality, it was more like the common cold: a fact of life. The institution predates the word's etymology, from the Slavs brought from eastern Europe to the glittering metropolis of Rome. It predates by some millennia the earliest laws, such as the Code of Hammurabi in Mesopotamia. The first slave owners on the North American continent were hunter-gatherers.

The Blame-America-First Crowd By Michael Barone

"They always blame America first." That was Jeane Kirkpatrick, describing the "San Francisco Democrats" in 1984. But it could be said about a lot of Americans, especially highly educated Americans, today.

In their assessment of what is going on in the world, they seem to start off with a default assumption that we are in the wrong. The "we" can take different forms: the United States government, the vast mass of middle-class Americans, white people, affluent people, churchgoing people or the advanced English-speaking countries. Such people are seen as privileged and selfish, greedy and bigoted, rash and violent. If something bad happens, the default assumption is that it's their fault. They always blame America -- or the parts of America they don't like -- first.

Where does this default assumption come from? And why is it so prevalent among our affluent educated class (which, after all, would seem to overlap considerably with the people being complained about?). It comes, I think, from our schools and, especially, from our colleges and universities. The first are staffed by liberals long accustomed to see America as full of problems needing solving; the latter have been packed full of the people cultural critic Roger Kimball calls "tenured radicals," people who see this country and its people as the source of all evil in the world.

Predicate for a Pardon By Greg Richards

The background of the Scooter Libby affair is the collapse of intelligence over the last 15 years. It is useful to revisit this very briefly in order to put the Libby conviction - and the propriety of a presidential pardon - in perspective.
The PBS show Frontline has a number of its past programs available for viewing online at its website. Yes, Frontline does lean left - it takes Joe Wilson's narrative at face value, for instance - but it is that rare media creature: left-leaning but remaining honest. It is a very good source on, for instance, pre-Iraq War controversies in planning and intelligence.
One of the shows that focuses on pre-war intelligence is called 'The Dark Side' from an infelicitous quote by Dick Cheney that 'we will have to spend time on the dark side.' Don't be put off by that; it is an excellent, if not entirely neutral, program. It is available here.

Cheney is a central figure in the program, as, indeed, he was in the build-up to the Iraq War. In the course of the program, there is this most interesting segment of clips from interviews with David Kay, the former weapons inspector, and Richard Clarke, the former White House anti-terrorism advisor. Neither man is regarded as an acolyte of the Administration.
