“Conservatives Left Behind” By Kathryn Jean Lopez

I know someone in the White House has Internet access — because Nicholas Thompson and Kerrie Rushton from the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives have been e-mailing back and forth in response to Corner posts about the Bush-Kennedy immigration deal for weeks now. Do they not talk to Tony Snow? Does no one talk to the president? Does the president just not care what his conservative allies on so many issues think?

I know I’m not the only one who sometimes suspects the latter.

On May 28, the president said: “If you want to kill the bill, if you don’t want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it, you can use it to frighten people. Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all.”

Real Clear Religion :: A CULTURE NEARING AN END

"If you are not yet convinced that the battle to save Europe is NOW-- and not in the year 2050 when the demographics have inalterably taken hold of the continent, then here is a bit more information to bring any skeptics up to speed.

A recent report shows that Germany's birth rate continued to decline in 2006. The government's socialistic incentives designed to increase baby-making have failed, and the upbeat predictions of a baby boom are now bust. There were more deaths than births which means that Germans failed to replace themselves. There are now widespread reports of a loss of workers to do menial labor throughout Europe. Without native born workers Europe is left with no choice but to liberalize immigration laws in order to sustain its economy. This is a quandry since many fear that a liberalization of immigration laws may bring terrorism, or worse yet, the creation of Eurabia. "

JFK Plot: The Herculean Approach to Combating Terrorism By Michael Tanji

"The passage of time allows for a more thorough and insightful analysis of related events, but at this stage time is at something of a premium. To that end your author undertakes a more substantial if premature effort to elaborate on earlier points made about the JFK plot. This is no means a comprehensive list of the broader implications of this plot, nor is the analysis exhaustive, it merely serves to reinforce lessons-learned and highlight certain fallacies that impede our ability to effectively face this threat.
The Battleground is Everywhere

It makes for a nice slogan – fighting them “there” so we won’t have to fight them “here” – but that was never a realistic strategy. The 9/11 hijackers were from over-there but they plotted and practiced here. Subsequent plots uncovered since 9/11, not to mention the various dry runs that have occurred, demonstrate that there is no shortage of domestic threats."

The United States at a Crossroads toward Third World Status by E. Ralph Hostetter

"It is axiomatic that an uncontrolled influx of immigrants, as now exists at the Mexican Border, and legal immigration through presently accepted chain-immigration policies, with no language requirements or assimilation into the culture, will change the status of the host nation to that of the immigrants. In other words, if America kept its doors open, as at present, the
Third World would continue to send its millions to the United States until a balance were reached when America would join the Third World itself.

Family reunification permits a newly naturalized citizen to bring members of his extended family to the host country. For each naturalization chain immigration gives us a bonus of three. It’s the gift that keeps on giving."

Time for conservatives again to split the blanket By PAT BUCHANAN

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.'

So said Jefferson. It would appear to be time again for a little rebellion in the Grand Old Party - this time against George II.

For President Bush has attacked his own loyalists for a lack of patriotism. 'If you don't want to do what's right for America,' he said of opponents of the Bush-Kennedy immigration bill, 'if you want to scare the American people, what you say is the bill's an amnesty bill. That's empty political rhetoric, trying to frighten our citizens.'

But if the 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens are instantly legalized, what other term is there to describe that than amnesty?"

Education at Its Finest By Henry P. Wickham, Jr.

"In a bygone era, a child sent to study the humanities was expected to drink deeply from the collected wisdom of the finest writers and artists, emerging with a heightened sense of mankind's potential for greatness as well the flaws inherent in human nature. But today, the forces of the left reign supreme, and agendas have pushed aside the deep truths of the human predicatment.

To get a better picture of the contemporary humanities, one can read books such as Alvin Kernan's The Death of Literature, John M. Ellis's Literature Lost, R. V. Young's At War With the Word, and Who Killed Homer? by Victor Davis Hanson and John Heath, to name only a few among many."

Who's to Blame for the Sellout? by Henry Lamb

"The nation’s transportation experts have identified the top three priorities: a national freight network; urban congestion; and connecting new urban centers with the interstate system. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, meeting in national conference last month, heard futurists predict that the cost of meeting the transportation needs would be $3.1 trillion over the next 25 years. State and local governments are turning to 'public-private partnerships' (PPP) to produce the funding.

The City of Chicago was happy to partner with a Spanish-Australian group that paid $1.83 billion for a 99-year lease to operate the Chicago Skyway. The same outfit paid Indiana $3.85 billion to operate the Indiana Tollway for 75 years. The same Spanish company has partnered with a Texas firm to give the state of Texas $7.2 billion to build and operate the first leg of the Trans-Texas Corridor. And Pennsylvania’s Governor Rendell is expecting a bid of between $15- $18 billion for the Pennsylvania turnpike.

Most states have already enacted, or are considering, legislation to authorize this PPP financing of public infrastructure.

Public opposition to PPP financing encouraged the Texas legislature to adopt a two-year moratorium on the state’s PPP projects. The governor’s veto, however, along with threats from the U.S. Department of Transportation, forced the legislature to pass a watered-down compromise bill that blocks only future PPP projects, but allows the current Trans-Texas Corridor to go forward."

Michael Moore: A Criminal Profile by Paul A. Ibbetson

"There is little doubt that Michael Moore is one of the most public anti-American propagandists of modern times. Without fail, his lengthy lists of so called documentary works have all encompassed his varying visions of the shortcomings of the United States. What many Americans take issue with Moore, is the deceptive means by which he collects his information and the even more deceptive way he portrays this information to the public.

When lamenting about Moore’s last work Fahrenheit 9/11, Christopher Hitchens would say, “To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would be to promote those terms to the level of respectability. To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental…Fahrenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness. It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of “dissenting” bravery.” (Hitchens, 2004, ¶3).

The Hitchens observation is important to the profiling of Moore for two reasons. First, it encapsulates a general feeling of many Americans, and more importantly, it shows that even the most godless among us realize that there is something fundamentally wrong with Michael Moore. Dave Kopel, of the Independence Institute, who appears in the Michael Moore rebuttal film Fahrenhype 9/11, has chronicled fifty- nine falsehoods within Moore’s documentary."

Melanie Phillips :: Liberalism v Islamism

"First of all, let me define my terms and say what I mean by Islamism and liberalism. Islamism is the politicised version of Islam which mandates jihad, or holy war against the infidel and conquest of the non-Islamic world for Islam. I’m well aware of the argument that there’s no difference between Islamism and Islam: that’s a theological argument for others to have.

By liberalism I mean the commitment to a free society, founded above all on the separation of secular government from religious worship — from which follow the concepts of equal respect for all people, freedom of conscience, tolerance and the rule of law.
These two concepts, Islamism and liberalism, are currently engaged in a fight to the death. My argument is that liberalism is in danger of losing this fight because it has so badly undermined itself and departed from its own core concepts that it is now paralysed by moral and intellectual muddle.

Liberalism is the creed of modernity. The driving force behind the Islamic jihad is the fight against liberalism and modernity. All the iconic conflicts — Iraq, Israel, Kashmir, Chechnya, Sudan —are secondary to the fundamental aim of the jihad to prevent liberalism and modernity from destroying Islam. "

The deep crisis of the West By Ole Jørgen Anfindsen

"Sometimes we make things too complicated. This article is an attempt at explaining, using as few words as possible, why Europe in particular, and the entire Western world in general, is in a deep crisis. This explanation will be followed by a brief discussion of some possible objections, after which several sobering facts and quotes are provided. The article is wrapped up with some concluding thoughts and remarks.

My pessimism on behalf of the Western civilization rests on the following simple observation: Somewhere, somehow, there has to be a limit to the amount of diversity a society can handle without becoming dysfunctional.

I am not pretending to know exactly where this limit is; I am merely claiming that such a limit must necessarily exist. With this as our basic assumption, we may reason as follows."

But all you have to do is to consider the wars of the last century and you will begin to appreciate the destruction and devastation their dream has wrought. Where it has not killed outright the people it was intended to help, it has instead sucked the motivation and life out of all those who have had the misfortune to dwell within the confines of societies which implemented socialist/utopian policies."

A bill making it illegal for people of various faiths to freely hold and profess their respective religion's teaching on sexual morality is working its way through Congress. Regardless of your politics, every American who cares about free speech and religious liberty should tell their U.S. senators to oppose this legislation. The Incredible Judicial Disparity: Berger v. Libby by Frank Salvato

"If you needed any more proof that the American judicial system is completely and alarmingly subjective – beyond Paris Hilton's early release – look no further than the disparity between the sentences imposed on Sandy Berger and I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby. In Washington DC’s version of The Peoples’ Court, it would seem that the deciding factors in how severe a sentence one gets depends on political party affiliation, the severity of the crime be damned.

This past Tuesday US District Judge Reggie B. Walton, a Bush 43 appointee, sentenced former Vice Presidential Chief of Staff I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby to 30 months in prison and fined him $250,000 for obstruction of justice and lying to a federal agent. Walton said he saw no good reason to allow Libby to remain free pending appeal. Walton also required Libby to serve two years probation upon release from prison.

Libby’s conviction stems from an overly aggressive investigation into the alleged “leaking” of a covert CIA agent’s name, Valerie Plame. Plame, the wife of the irritatingly smug Joseph Wilson, had sent him on a non-White House sanctioned exploratory mission to Niger, which, as Christopher Hitchens aptly points out, inadvertently validated President Bush’s claim that Saddam Hussein had been shopping for yellowcake uranium in Niger, a point the agenda-driven media dropped at the Wilson’s allegation of Plame’s outing."

Hence, through major wars, minor conflicts, turmoil, depression, and dissension, America, for the most part, has been able to maintain the fundamental underpinnings that made our country unique. But, Ladies and Gentlemen, those underpinnings are very quickly disappearing.

In a very real sense, this is not our fathers' America. And by that, I am not referring to our modern conveniences, our advanced technologies, or our avant-garde styles of dress and forms of entertainment. I am talking about the principles and values that cut to the very core of who and what we are as a nation. We are fast losing the substance of what it means to be American. "

But the objectives coincide, perhaps fatally so.

Radical Objectivist philosopher Stephen Hicks has written the book on postmodernism. He uses an insightful classification: not Left, and certainly not Right, but Counter-Enlightenment. In view of the Liberal moral bankruptcy and rampant degeneracy that - at particularly vulnerable times - makes radical Islam seem almost preferable, one can easily see that Liberalism has had its day and is over the hill. Most reviews of these books and interviews with the authors have raised the not-so-hot record of atheistic societies. The authors, of course, promptly dismiss these concerns. As The Economist review of Mr. Hitchens 'God is not Great' puts it:

'To the objection that irreligious fascists and communists found plenty of non-religious reasons for murder in the 20th century, Mr Hitchens retorts that these beliefs were types of secularised religion, and as such do not count.'

The Muslim Brotherhood's Long-Standing War On The West Part Four (of Four) By Adrian Morgan

"In Britain in 1997, the Muslim Brotherhood founded the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB). This group claims to be moderate, and promotes missionary (dawah) work among the young. Its founder, Kamal Tawfik Helbawy, was at that time the Brotherhood's European spokesman. Born in Egypt in 1939, he had been a member of the Brotherhood since the age of 12. He co-founded the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) in Saudi Arabia in 1972 with Abdullah bin Laden, Osama's nephew. WAMY is an organization which has been accused of funding terrorist organizations, including Hamas. Kamal Helbawy was WAMY's first president.

In November 1997, in the same year that he had founded MAB, Helbawy helped to found the Muslim Council for Britain (MCB), which was officially inaugurated on March 1, 1998. Climate Alarmists Lose Another Piece of Evidence By Dennis Avery

"Don't look now, but another big chunk of the 'evidence' for man-made global warming suddenly disappeared. Poof! Researchers just reported that the world's most recent case of 'abrupt climate change' - which occurred a mere 12,000 years ago - was probably due to a comet strike, not to 'climate sensitivity.'

The Younger Dryas occurred as an Ice Age was ending. As the climate began to warm, a huge and sudden rush of fresh meltwater broke out from the Great Lakes and swept out to sea. The water surge was monumental enough that the meltwater lowered the salinity of the ocean, shut down the Atlantic conveyor currents, which disperse the planet’s heat, and threw the northern hemisphere back into another thousand years of Ice Age. It raised temperatures near Greenland by a startling 15 degrees C, even as it doubled annual rainfall.

Modern climatologists have savored the Younger Dryas event as massive evidence of what comes when we push the planet’s climate too close to a “tipping point.” Further human-driven warming, they say, will make such abrupt climate changes more likely, with searing droughts, torrential rainfall, and extreme heat."

British magazine looks forward to an Islamic London by Lawrence Auster

"I wrote in January 2006 ('Western liberals' ultimate embrace of Islam') that if the day comes when Islam takes over Europe, the European elites will positively welcome it, because 'they literally do not want our civilization to continue, it's too guilty, too powerful, and its guilt and its power are too much of a burden for them.' I said they would be happier as functionaries of a European Caliphate.

In June 2007 the British website Time Out writes:

Is London's future Islamic?

It's the capital's fastest growing religion, based on noble traditions and compassionate principles, yet Islam can still be tainted by mistrust and misunderstanding. Here Time Out argues that an Islamic London would be a better place.
The rest of the article catalogs the ways that Muslim domination would improve London and Britain--better health (Muslims wash their hands five times a day, and Muslims don't drink), better education (at Islamic schools), better race relations (Muslims consider all people to be one--uh, excuse me, they consider all Muslims to be one). At times you start to think it's a parody, but as a whole it does not read like a parody and, as appalling as this is, I don't think it is one."

The Victims of Communism Memorial By Quin Hillyer

"Historian Robert Conquest, one of the first Westerners to use painstaking research to lift the veil on the terrors of the Great Terror and other murderous purges in the Soviet Union, got the essential nature of Communism exactly right. Brutality, terror, and murder are, and always have been, essential components of Communism. And Communism proved extremely effective with those components. Worldwide, some 100 million victims have died from Communist terror, purges, forced relocations and famines -- and that number doesn't even include all those Americans and other freedom-loving people who died in noble wars (Korea, Vietnam, etc.) trying to keep Communism from spreading.

Those numbers, by the way, come not from any right-wing organization. They come from 1999's The Black Book of Communism, written by six leftist French intellectuals and published by Harvard University Press. They are numbers that stagger the imagination. And they are not just numbers but souls, 100 million human souls, whose lives and sufferings deserve commemoration."

From what I can tell, this sensory illusion or, should I say, delusion, has happened to more people than we might realize. As I observed the other car backing into a parking space, I felt a bit foolish myself for having lost it for a second.

Unfortunately, it has become increasingly obvious that conservatives are nowhere near moving forward as much as liberals are going in reverse. Conservatives are not becoming any more rational, logical, patriotic, pragmatic or American as much as liberals are increasingly becoming less so. Simply put, conservatives are no closer to getting a clue as much as liberals are becoming increasingly clueless."

In the months ahead, lawmakers will vote repeatedly on whether U.S. troops should stay and whether Bush has the authority to continue the war. According to Karita Bekkemellem, government Minister from the Norwegian Labor Party, female directors must make up at least 40 percent of all new shareholder-owned companies’ boards of directors: “This is all about sharing power and influence and it is intervention in private ownership, but it was overdue.” Violation of the rules will be penalized with forced dissolution of the company. Another Act Of War :: Investor's Business Daily

"Iran has been caught — again — sending arms to terrorists and insurgents who are trying to kill American soldiers. At some point, a line is drawn in the sand, and we either say 'enough' or 'we give up.'
It's hard to tell whether Iran's repeated provocations are an attempt to shame the U.S., which so far has done little to stop them, or just another bad terrorist habit they can't break.

NATO says Iran has been shipping arms to its one-time enemy, Afghanistan's Taliban, those nice fundamentalist fellows who cut off fingers and hands, stoned women to death and murdered their foes for over a half a decade before being ousted by the U.S. in late 2001."

Entitled “The Evolution of the Family in Europe 2007,” IFP presented the document with alarming indicators regarding population, birth rates, marriage and divorce rates to members of the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee, journalists and members of civil society."

The most dangerous worldview :: Vox Popoli

I find it amusing that so many atheists, who are presumably rational materalists dedicated to the concept of truth determined by empirical evidence, immediately turn to making logic-based philosophical arguments as if they were medieval theologians in answer to this question instead of simply examining the relevant and readily available historical evidence. Aren't atheists were all about science, not ontological assertions?

Here's the evidence: Christians have held positions of government power for 1,700 years. The religious wars they have waged account for just under 3 percent of the wars in recorded human history. Muslims have been in power for around 1300 years and are similarly responsible for about 4 percent of the wars in human history. Atheists have been in power for around 100 years and are responsible for around 2 percent of the wars in history.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Long-Standing War On The West: Part Three (of Four) By Adrian Morgan

Last year, on July 30, Mohammed Mahdi Akef (Akif), the current "guide general" of the Muslim Brotherhood, spoke on Al Jazeera television. He warned the Egyptian government: "These ignorants who rule Egypt with force and with security agencies - I call upon them to fear Allah, to return to Allah, and to reach out to this people, which attributes power and honor to you. Otherwise, the people will soon trample you underfoot, Allah willing."

Akif also had harsh words for the West: "This American Satan claims to be a messenger of divine guidance. Divine guidance never commands anything but truth, justice, and freedom, things that have nothing to do with him. I salute all the honorable Americans who stand up to this Satan, who wants to set the entire world on fire, not just the Arab and Islamic nation. I go back to the issue of Jihad. Jihad is an individual duty incumbent upon every Muslim, male and female, if any inch of the land of Islam and the Muslims is occupied."

Somebody had to say it By Carolyn Hileman

Having heard my fill for the second year in a row that there are jobs that we in America can't fill and that is why we need to bring in people from other countries, I have decided that since they won't say it I will, if as they say we have a shortage of skilled workers that shortage falls on those who would spend their time trying to coddle leaders of other countries rather than address the fact that while we are prepared to pay $32 trillion dollars over the next ten years to make sure our new citizens are happy, there has never been and never will be a bill on the house floor that will give our children the ability to gain that training.

This is nothing more than a failure of education, a failure of leaders and a failure of the people for not demanding that our children be given equal opportunity in our own country. Many of these high skilled visas they are handing out are in careers in nursing, x-ray,tech. and other fields that our children would be interested in however, most of them simply cannot afford an education. There is help for those who are underprivileged, help for those who are minority, help those who are here illegally, but help a child whose parents work and pay taxes, nah, we wouldn’t want to do that.

Defending Dixie By Bob Cheeks

The learned Professor Eric Voegelin in his essay, "Why Philosophize? To Recapture Reality!", wrote, “One of the typical phenomenon of the twentieth century is the event of spiritually energetic people breaking out of the dominant intellectual group in order to find that reality that has been lost.”

Voegelin’s identification of this group of intellectuals willing to challenge the distortions inherent in modernity explain why the West, in general, and the United States, in particular, has yet to succumb to the continuing philosophical derailment endemic in Western culture. It is good, I think, when we are able to identify one of those who replenish the “reservoirs of reality” because in reading their corpus we are able to acquire the knowledge, both intellectually and spiritually, to strengthen our own resolve. One intellectual whose work is defined by this spiritual breakout is Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Clyde N. Wilson. His new book, Defending Dixie, is an eclectic collection of essays and book reviews.

Democrats, Iran Partner for Summer Offensive By Andrew Walden

US Democrats and Iran have turned their attention toward turning American public opinion towards surrender.

With the Congressional reauthorization of funding for Iraqi operations just days old, Democrats, their media, and Iran are already beginning a summer offensive aimed at achieving Islamist victory in Iraq by the only means possible — turning American public opinion towards surrender. A May 25 AP article by Anne Flaherty explains the Democrat strategy:

In the months ahead, lawmakers will vote repeatedly on whether U.S. troops should stay and whether Bush has the authority to continue the war. The Democratic strategy is intended to ratchet up pressure on the President, as well as on moderate Republicans who have grown tired of defending Bush administration policy in a deeply unpopular war. ‘I feel a direction change in the air,’ said Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the House panel that oversees military funding.

The Neglected Truths of the Immigration Debate By Thomas Lifson

The vast gulf between the political elites and the bulk of the electorate is matched by the vast gulf between the announced intentions of "comprehensive immigration reform" and the inevitable results of their proposals.

Common sense is being strikingly disregarded. And most of the politically correct media are loath to puncture the fantasies of the reformistas. The result is that a majority of the discussion is pointless, and unusually few people have been either informed or persuaded by all the public discourse. The scandalous immigration crisis has been joined by the scandalous immigration bill debate.

The MSNBC debate last month took presidential debates to a place they've never been before when the Republican candidates were asked for a show of hands if they believed in evolution. Mike Huckabee did not raise his hand that evening in South Carolina, so perhaps it is unsurprising that he was asked Tuesday night in New Hampshire just what exactly he believes about human origins. Sensibly, Huckabee wondered aloud what the relevance of the question was to his ability to do the job of president of the United States. Nevertheless, it was clear enough that he had practiced his answer when he won the applause of the crowd by stating that he viewed the bald question as one of whether he believes in God and believes God created man. Taking that as the question, he stated his belief in "a God who knows us and loves us and created us for His own purpose."

The Immigration Reform Act for Dummies II By Bob Parks

According to a recent and stupid Washington Post/ABC News poll, more people would be for legalizing illegal aliens if they pay a fine for their violation of our border and law. What the Washington Post and ABC News failed to tell those in the poll was that the compassionate, tolerant, inclusive left are already trying to find politicians to lessen or strike altogether the fine because they're too punitive on the poor illegals.

It's abundantly clear that the people responding to the poll, as President Bush has pointed out many times, don't know what they're talking about.

We continue on our refresher on what's in this bill so we can make a much more informed evaluation of the Ted Kennedy (again) Bush amnesty bill.

Authorizes the Secretary of State to award a grant to a U.S. land grant university to establish a university-based Mexican rural poverty mitigation program.

Why…?

Sets forth provisions respecting: (1) additional DHS and Department of Justice immigration personnel; and (2) the Board of Immigration Appeals.

Americans Right to Set Limits by Mac Johnson

Despite all the hype raging in Washington about the need for “immigration reform” in response to the illegal alien flood, the simple fact is that we do not have a broken immigration system. What we actually have is a broken immigration enforcement system.

America admits more legal immigrants than any country on Earth -- there isn’t even a close second place in this regard. Why? Because if you want freedom and opportunity, where else are you going to go? And America is more accepting of immigrants than any other nation. The problem is that, regardless of how high our limits for legal immigration are, the world is capable of exceeding those limits -- and there exists a constituency of corrupt businesses and politicians within our country that is willing to aid and abet the violation of any limit for their own gain. Yet the proponents of the so-called immigration reform bill would have us believe that the problem is not illegal immigration -- it’s the fact that there exists any limit at all on legal immigration.

America's Insidious Descent Toward the Third World By Christopher Adamo

Somewhere in the dark recesses of their souls, an increasing number of Americans fear the eventuality of an ultimate confrontation with Mexico over the disputed territories, formerly known as the Southwestern United States. But visions of the affair as a horde of brass-buttoned soldiers, marching on San Jacinto with bayoneted muskets to retake it, are woefully mistaken.

Were that the case, the overt threat would be obvious and recognizable. America could certainly rally and respond with sufficient force to decisively win the battle. But no such events are taking place. In their stead, a much less dramatic scenario promises far greater detriment to the country, though its protracted nature renders it less shocking, and therefore more likely to succeed. In fact, in many respects, it already has.

So serious is the resurgence of lead poisoning among U.S. children that the Iowa Department of Public Health is working on writing a new law to require mandatory testing of those entering school for the first time.

"When we do rise, it will fill our spirits and bind us together. Those who are now suffocating in cynicism and despair will be able to breathe freely. Those who are now suffering from a loss of meaning in their lives will find hope." When we rise, "we will experience an epiphany as we discover that this crisis is not really about politics at all. It is a moral and spiritual challenge."

The Liberal Suicide Pact BY JAMES TARANTO

It seems we weren't the only one to notice that the New York Times buried news of a foiled terror plot against John F. Kennedy International Airport on page 37. A pair of Times readers submitted questions about this to Suzanne Daley, the paper's national editor, who is doing a "Talk to the Newsroom" question-and-answer series this week. Here is Daley's explanation:

Here's the basic thinking on the J.F.K. story: In the years since 9/11, there have been quite a few interrupted terrorist plots. It now seems possible to exercise some judgment about their gravity. Not all plots are the same. In this case, law enforcement officials said that J.F.K. was never in immediate danger. The plotters had yet to lay out plans. They had no financing. Nor did they have any explosives. It is with all that in mind, that the editors in charge this weekend did not put this story on the front page.

The Republicans’ Hispanic Delusion By Heather Mac Donald

George Bush’s political strategists have long promoted amnesty for illegal aliens as a device for increasing the Republican vote among Hispanics. They also warn that denying rights to illegal aliens will hurt the GOP. A Hispanic backlash in California after Proposition 187 (the 1994 voter initiative that denied illegal aliens many publicly funded services) turned the state from red to blue, they claim; a similar rout awaits the party if it does not embrace liberal immigration policies.

There is scant evidence for either of these ideas. The 1986 amnesty signed by President Reagan did not trigger a Latino surge into the Republican Party. And California’s Hispanics leaned as strongly Democratic before Prop. 187 as after it. Hispanic voting patterns in California have held steady since 1988—they vote approximately two-to-one for Democratic presidential candidates. California’s shift from red to blue would have happened with or without Prop. 187, as defense-industry whites left the state, replaced by liberal high-tech professionals, and as the Hispanic portion of the electorate tripled from 7 percent to 21 percent.

In a dispatch that would have made Jeremiah look like a cock-eyed optimist, Mr. Halkin went down the list of existential threats facing the Jewish state and the conclusion was inescapable:

Israel is doomed.

By the end of his article - "If Israel Ceased to Exist" - it's clear there's not much "if" about it.

In addition to all the usual clear and increasingly present dangers to Israel's existence, there now looms Iran's steadily developing nuclear program. Iran's president, the incessant Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has made his policy toward Israel perfectly clear: Wipe it off the map.

And soon enough, if the world keeps dithering, he'll have the nuclear means to do it. Let this much be said for Iran's firebrand-in-chief: He's an open book, namely Mein Kampf.

But won't Israel's nuclear arsenal deter him?"

Scrap Migrant Bill By Fred Thompson

"Most Americans know that we have an illegal immigration problem in this country, with perhaps as many as 20 million people residing here unlawfully. And I think most Americans have a pretty good idea about how to at least start solving the problem – secure our nation’s borders.

But there’s an old saying in Washington that, in dealing with any tough issue, half the politicians hope that citizens don’t understand it while the other half fear that people actually do. This kind of thinking was apparent with the “comprehensive” immigration reform bill that the U.S. Senate and the White House negotiated yesterday.
I’d tell you what was in the legislation, but 24 hours after the politicians agreed the bill looked good, the Senate lawyers were still writing what may turn out to be a one thousand page document. In fact, a final version of the bill most likely will not be made available to the public until after the legislation is passed. That may come five days from now. Many powerful elitists do in fact view the European bloc as a success, and are adopting similar tactics of gradually abandoning border controls by bureaucratic and administrative decisions, with little or no public debate.

Without effective border controls, there is no national sovereignty, and without national sovereignty there can be no effective democracy. When lamenting about Moore’s last work Fairenheit 9/11, Christopher Hitchens would say, “To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would be to promote those terms to the level of respectability. To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental...Fairenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness. It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of “dissenting” bravery” (Hitchens, 2004, 3). The Hitchens observation is important to the profiling of Moore for two reasons. First, it encapsulates a general feeling of many Americans, and more importantly, it shows that even the most godless among us realize that there is something fundamentally wrong with Michael Moore. Dave Kopel, of the Independence Institute, who appears in the Michael Moore rebuttal film Farenhype 9/11, has chronicled fifty- nine falsehoods within Moore’s documentary. "

Hence, not only did I take language lessons 7 days a week from my Indonesian teacher, he taught me why he believed Islam was the only true religion in the world and why I should convert to Islam.

What I discovered from my language teacher really did amaze me because according to Muslims, every soul on this earth is a Muslim whether they know it or not because Islam was created by God while all other religions were created by man. Let me repeat that so I make myself clear. Muslims believe Islam was created by God; Muhammad was the messenger of God while Jesus never even spoke to God, much less was the son of God. Hence, Islam was founded by God while Jesus, a simple man, founded a man-made religion. "

It was cyber-warfare in the form of computer sabotage and it shook the NATO alliance of which Estonia is now a member."

Fred Thompson: The Phantom of the Debate by Ericka Andersen

"A phantom stood behind an invisible podium in the New Hampshire Republican debates last night. But unlike the first two debates, no one tried to pretend former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson wasn’t a key player in the 2008 presidential race. It was another Thompson who introduced Fred to the audience by saying he was, “Thompson -- Tommy -- not the other one.”

Some say the stalling to officially announce a candidacy could be crippling to fundraising while others insist it is downright smart. Nevertheless, the silence was a golden emphasis of Fred Thompson’s near-prominence in the race last night. "

Moyers Indoctrinates College Students by Mark D. Tooley

"Former Lyndon Johnson aid Bill Moyers long ago strayed from his Southern Baptist roots before becoming the self-styled political prophet in residence at PBS. Last week he delivered his latest jeremiad against America, in the form of a commencement speech, to the graduating class of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas.

Moyers darkly warned against an American 'empire' and decried all threats to the welfare state that he helped erect 40 years ago.

'America is a great promise, but it is a broken promise,' Moyers sanctimoniously intoned. He insisted that America's calling is 'not as an empire. Or a superpower. Not a place where the strong take what they can and the weak what they must.'"

FrontPage magazine.com :: Islamists in the Courtroom by Daniel Pipes

"The decision last week by the Islamic Society of Boston to drop its lawsuit against 17 defendants, including counterterrorism specialist Steven Emerson, gives reason to step back to consider radical Islam's legal ambitions.

The lawsuit came about because, soon after ground was broken in November 2002 for the ISB's $22 million Islamic center, the media and several non-profits began asking questions about three main topics: why the ISB paid the city of Boston less than half the appraised value of the land it acquired; why a city of Boston employee, who is also an ISB board member, fund raised on the Boston taxpayer's tab for the center while traveling in the Middle East; and the ISB's connections to radical Islam.

Resurrecting Yugoslavia by Julia Gorin

"Western powers led by the United States went to great lengths to abolish a pluralistic society called Yugoslavia, encouraging its component ethnicities to assert their identities and vie for their own little slice of land based on those separate identities.

Yet as soon as one of those separate identities that we’ve buttressed misbehaves, suddenly we bring Yugoslavia back from the dead. Witness the strategic and ubiquitous use of the word “Yugoslav” in virtually every media report describing the four Albanian suspects in the recently foiled Fort Dix plot."

The Demise of the Republican Party? By Alan Caruba

"The firestorm of public outcry against the proposed immigration bill is testimony enough that the Senate and the House need to be reminded that selling out the nation is a very bad idea. There are very good reasons why nations have borders.

The bill is just one more way the Republican Party demonstrated that it has been steadily abandoning its fundamental principles. In essence, the party has stood for sovereignty, the free market, fiscal prudence, private property, and small government. It was a party that historically has been reluctant to be drawn into foreign wars."

What's Ahead for America When the Third Worlders Dominate? By Selwyn Duke

"When Thomas Jefferson said that “people get the government they deserve,” it was more than just a clever turn of phrase. It also was not an isolated insight but a timeless truth, one expressed by many. William Cowper said, “When was public virtue to be found when private was not?”

Benjamin Franklin stated, “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.”

If truth be known, I could probably fill a book with the words of wise ones who have spoken in kind. But, you know, I understand this principle well. I know that people get the government they deserve; what bothers me is that I’m going to get the government they deserve."

West Bank and Gaza: Fairy Tales and the Media

"The failure by editors of supposedly impartial and respected newspapers to correct inaccuracies in media articles regarding the West Bank and Gaza prior to their publication, gives continuing credence to total Arab denial of any Jewish rights in those areas - and also seriously misleads and misinforms their trusting readers as to the nature of the conflict that is taking place.

Letters written to the editors requesting corrections are usually consigned to the waste paper basket and even if printed, are too late to undo the damage - allowing gross distortion of facts to be perpetuated and in many cases repeated by the same and other journalists.

A classic case in point is the article - 'War over, but the fight goes on' - written by Ed O'Loughlin, which appeared in two of Australia's most respected newspapers - the Sydney Morning Herald and the Brisbane Times - on 2 June 2007 to mark the 40 th Anniversary of the Six Day War in 1967. "

Preliminary Observations About A Fred D. Thompson Presidential Race by Paul M. Weyrich

"Ever since Ronald Reagan passed away, when even liberals seemed to appreciate him and his role in history, there has been a demand among rank-and-file conservatives that we find another Ronald Reagan. It goes back to the time when George H. W. Bush broke his pledge, “Read my lips: No new taxes.” It was more of a wish than a demand and confined more toward the politically conscious. What was a wish had become a demand since even liberal commentators found it in their hearts to say kind things about Reagan upon his death, leaving it to the far-left ideologues to trash him.
Ordinarily decent second-tier candidates such as former Governor Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin or Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas might have been able to surpass a weak first-tier, which has a lot of problems. "

Nor can we do anything to avert a further injustice looming on the horizon--Judge Reggie Walton seems inclined not to let Libby remain free pending appeal.

Unlike the rest of us, however, George W. Bush is president. Article II, Section Two of the Constitution gives him the pardon power. George W. Bush can do something to begin to make up for the injustice a prosecutor appointed by his own administration brought down on Scooter Libby. And he can do something to avert the further injustice of a prison term."

Fred Night By John Tabin

"At last night's debate in New Hampshire, all three of the top-tier candidates were in good form. John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Mitt Romney were all crisp, assertive, and even presidential. And none of it mattered, as they were all overshadowed by an elephant in the corner.

Fred Thompson hasn't entered the race yet, but he has confirmed that he almost certainly will. It took less than a minute before he was mentioned last night, as the candidates were asked to introduce themselves. 'My name is Thompson -- Tommy Thompson. The candidate, not the actor,' said the former Wisconsin governor and secretary of Heath and Human Services. It was a bad joke, and like most of what comes out of Tommy Thompson's mouth it made one wonder if he's actually delusional enough to think he can be president, but it's understandable that the topic of 'the actor' would be on Gov. Thompson's mind; political observers can hardly talk about anything else. And it wasn't the last time Fred Thompson would come up."

Unlike ideologues and the less informed among us, I have always attempted to give the benefit of the doubt to politicians inside whose minds I am unable to psychically probe and whose actions have not yet given sufficient indication to which side of the line they fall regarding dedication to the United States of America versus vainglory and self-aggrandizement. Obviously, many politicians on both sides of the aisle tend toward inscrutability in this area, strongly suggesting that they are consummate prostitutes at heart who fall on the latter sign of the line.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Long-Standing War On The West By Adrian Morgan

"The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 in Egypt by a schoolteacher, Hassan al-Banna. He had been born in Mahmudiyya near Cairo on October 14, 1906, the eldest son of a watch-repairer, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Banna. Though the family was never wealthy, it upheld a long tradition of Islamic scholarship. Al-Banna senior was an imam who had graduated from Cairo's Al-Azhar University, the largest Sunni seminary in the world. Ahmad spent 40 years of his life compiling and cataloguing an estimated 45,000 reports of the sayings and deeds of the prophet Mohammed. The most respected collector of such hadith, Bukhari (810 to 870 AD), included only 2,062 of these quotations in his collection which he considered to be 'sahih' or authentic. "

The Immigration Reform Act For Dummies Part 1 of 2 By Bob Parks

"Unfortunately the very same President George W. Bush, with whom many of us have defended against the routine attacks of the left for years, has publicly inferred that we all just don’t know what we’re talking about regarding the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007.

Instead of filling us all in, the Republican elite just denigrates us, just as liberals do, and if you were to listen to them, we just don’t know what we’re talking about and that’s that.

“This bill isn’t amnesty. For those who call it amnesty, they’re just trying to, in my judgment, frighten people about the bill. This bill is one that says we recognize that you’re here illegally and there’s a consequence for it. We can argue about the consequences, but you can’t argue about the fact that there are consequences in this bill for people who have broken our law.”

We’ll get to those “consequences” directly."

Victor Davis Hanson on Iraq

"The United States can usually win even postmodern wars abroad if it can play to its strengths — which are marshaling our enormous material, intelligence, and technological advantages to defeat the enemy before he inflicts enough casualties to convince an affluent and comfortable public at home that such losses are simply not worth the envisioned aims."

So how are we doing?

As expected, many of our traditional advantages are being nullified.

How can Americans use air superiority against an enemy that hides among civilians and dares them to destroy infrastructure essential to our friends?

We create sophisticated communications at great cost and investment; the parasitical terrorists simply bore into them and use them at no cost and sometimes with greater effect than do their inventors (e.g., Why are not jihadist websites deemed as dangerous as IEDs, but not attacked in similar fashion?).

Failure Is Not An Option By Jeffrey Epstein

Our current state of affairs certainly begs the question as to whether we can really afford to ignore costly lessons from history. One would think that we learned something from the murderous attack launched against us during the predawn hours of December 7th, 1941.

The first wave of 181 warplanes departed from six Japanese carriers to strike our fleet at Pearl Harbor and surrounding military airfields. At 7:00AM, the incoming squadrons appeared on the screens of the Army radar station at Opana. News of the steady-bearing “contacts” was immediately relayed up through the chain of command. However, senior officers falsely attributed those sightings to the anticipated echoes of returning American planes and never sounded the appropriate alarms – a costly assumption that contributed to the death toll of some 2400 servicemen.

A 9/11 Father, Lifelong Republican, Says: Time To Impeach Bush Over Immigration By Peter Gadiel :: VDare

My son was one of the nearly 3000 people murdered on September 11, 2001 by nineteen illegal aliens.

It was easy for the 19 monsters who committed these acts to get into our country and, once in, to remain here unchallenged and at their leisure plan, rehearse, finance and carry out their mass murder. The 9/11 attacks, the murder of my son and thousands of others, were made possible, even inevitable, by the open borders policies instigated by the likes of Ted Kennedy, Charles Schumer, John McCain and others who are in the pockets of the Open Borders Lobby.

They share in the responsibility for those deaths.

It was to oppose the Open Borders Lobby that a dozen 9/11 family members founded 9/11 Families for a Secure America in 2003. As one of the officers of that organization, it has been a necessary but very painful part of my work to meet hundreds of others who lost beloved family members in the 9/11 attacks.

What Roosevelt Didn't Know By Arnold Kling

The U.S. economy survived the dotcom bubble and crash of 1999-2000 much better than it survived the stock market bubble and crash of 1929. One reason is that President Bush did a better job of sifting through economic advice than did President Roosevelt. (My early evaluation of the Bush record from a macro perspective still stands.)

One of the legends of the Great Depression is that no one knew what to do about it until John Maynard Keynes published The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money in 1936. One comes away from The Forgotten Man less convinced that the state of the art in economics was inadequate. Instead, it seems that Hoover and Roosevelt were not paying attention to the better economists of the day. Had there been a Council of Economic Advisers in 1930, the Great Depression might have been avoided, even though no member of the Council would have known Keynesian terminology. My current view is that The General Theory included more ideas than were necessary to diagnose and treat the problem of the 1930's.

Biblical worldview cited as critical to survival of Christian faith in America Allie Martin

The founder of the Center for Moral Clarity says Christians in America must be equipped to stand against secular humanist worldviews and choose to get involved in the culture war. Otherwise, says Rod Parsley, the United States could look like post-Christian Europe within a single generation.

In his new book Culturally Incorrect; How Clashing Worldviews Affect Your Future, Pastor Rod Parsley says decades of liberalism and post-modern thinking have crippled America. It is vital, he says for Christians to have a biblical worldview.

"If we don't engage in this fight, [in one generation] we are going to ... look like post-Christian Europe," Parsley warns. He cites an example. "In Austria, scientists appealed to the government of Austria to give apes human rights, since [they believe] we are descendants of apes," he says.

Our Founders' views on the Bible in public schools By Chuck Norris

As young people around the nation graduate from academic institutions of all types, I espouse that we all graduate in our understanding of what our Founders wanted for public education.

A while ago, I read a few blogs in which skeptics were taking issue with information I presented in my column on our Founders' endorsement of the Bible being taught in public schools, which is even now happening in 373 school districts in 37 states, including my home state of Texas.

Because my wife, Gena, and I are on the board of the National Council of Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, I'm hand delivering the coup de grace to any opposition of our Founders' educative intent of the good book – in their own words. Granted space doesn't permit an exhaustive treatment, but the following select citations should suffice all but those who remain defiant to historical fact.
