Four, 30 second videos below.
Thanks for the email from Vets For Freedom, we have the Freedom Watch videos that we referred to in an earlier post:

And now the Democrats, along with wavering Republicans, will face an advertising blitz from Bush supporters determined to remain on offense. A new pressure group, Freedom's Watch, will unveil a month-long, $15 million television, radio and grass-roots campaign today designed to shore up support for Bush's policies before the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, lays out a White House assessment of the war's progress. The first installment of Petraeus's testimony is scheduled to be delivered before the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees on the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a fact both the administration and congressional Democrats say is simply a scheduling coincidence.

How the West Lost the Cold War :: Gates Of Vienna

The girlfriend of a politician from the Sweden Democrats, a small party critical of mass immigration, was recently attacked at her home outside Stockholm. The young woman was found bound with duct tape in the apartment block where she lives with Martin Kinnunen, chairman of the youth wing of the SD. Three men had forced their way into the couple’s apartment and held the 19-year-old at knife point. Kinnunen tells of several threats and anonymous phone calls to the family. He blames the media for systematically portraying the SD as monsters and thus for legitimizing aggression against them, and claims that the Swedish democracy is a sham.

We Did It to Ourselves By Patrick Buchanan

"After 34 years with LTV Steel, I was forced to retire because of a disability. Two years later, LTV filed bankruptcy. I lost a third of my pension, and my family lost their health care. Every day of my life, I sit at the kitchen table across from the woman who devoted 36 years of her life to my family, and I can't afford to pay for her health care. What's wrong with America, and what will you do to change it?"

It was the most compelling moment of the Democratic debate at Soldier Field. The speaker was retired steelworker Steve Skvara. He stood on crutches, voice breaking, as he spoke.

There are millions of Steve Skvaras out there, and what they do not know, in their anger and frustration, is that their government did this to them. They are the victims of an ideology that gripped both parties and is destroying the middle-class country they grew up in.

Furthermore, what does all of this have to do with the triumphant shriek of Western womanhood on wriggling into jeans fit for a seven-year-old?

A: Plenty.

The fascists are still coming! But this time, they're libertarians in deadly sneakers! :: Classical Values

I had a pretty good education (at least I like to think I had), and in addition to that, I've read a lot of books about history, including many about the Third Reich. I've studied the origins and rise of both Hitler and Mussolini, and I've read about innumerable fascist and quasi-fascist regimes. The usual stuff like Franco in Spain, Salazar in Portugal, Stroessner in Paraguay, Peron in Argentina (although he was a left/right hybrid), along with some convincing analyses that modern China is actually a fascist, not Communist, state.

But it was under "Bush fascism" that I noticed a steady deterioration in my skills. Not only was I not "getting it" (and failing to recognize the fascism before my very eyes), but a lot of people weren't. I don't know whether to blame Bush entirely for this, but it was during the Bush regime that the definition of fascism seemed to change dramatically, and become infinitely more complicated.

I used to think I knew what fascism was, but the longer Bush was in office, the more the word seemed to take on new meanings. It was as if the word "fascism" had developed an elasticized penumbra, and acquired octopus-like tentacles which reached out and engulfed things which in the old days had not been considered fascism, but which now were. Fascist hegemony was being achieved not by goose-stepping soldiers, but by definitional expansionism -- largely accomplished by computer keyboards.

Quite naively, I resorted to the traditional dictionary definition of fascism:

Update From Miami :: Babalu Blog

Watching Polos Opuestos on Channel 22 here in Miami, and the word is that the rumors of fidel's death are just that. Host Maria Elvira Salazar interviewed Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, and the mayor emphasized that there have been no movement of law enforcement to handle the rumored situation. Most importantly, Diaz said that the city is maintaining contact with the federal government and that the feds would notify the city once they receive the official word. There have been no unusual movement of Coast Guard personnel or vessels either, according to Diaz.

Jesus Marzo Fernandez, ex-high ranking Cuban official, was on the set of the show and stated that he has been in contact with several Cuban officials and they confirmed that there is no unusual movement of Cuban military forces. They showed a clip from tonight's Cuban TV Mesa Redonda program which was showing regular programming (with none other than Miami resident and castro agent Max Lesnik in the audience!).

British Openings By William F. Buckley

Western Europe has a Muslim problem, and it is particularly acute in Great Britain, which is more intimately linked to constitutional traditions and procedures. The French are quietly aghast at the presence of 5 million Muslims in their midst and are endeavoring to cope. But that is a country which is enjoying (or accommodating) its Fifth Republic. If a Sixth Republic were introduced in the years ahead, one would not think the event mortally destabilizing.

In Britain the situation is different. For one thing, we have there the mother of parliaments, which has weathered tumult and war and devolution, without any sense that the vital organs of British life had been anachronized. Consider only the monarchy. It is easy to think of it as Punch and Judy, but it is more than that, never mind the annus horribilis about which the queen complained. And that year was followed by others in which she breathed a sigh of relief when a member of the royal family was not divorcing, renouncing a title or dying in a French tunnel with her lover.

The paranoid style of the American left. by Noemie Emery

The fascists are coming! Or rather, they're already here, installed in the White House, planning like mad to subvert the Constitution and extend their reign in perpetuity, having first suppressed and eviscerated all opposition and put all of their critics in jail. Thus goes the rant of America's increasingly unhinged left. If only, sigh many Bush partisans, wondering when this administration will get out of the fetal position and show some fighting spirit. To them, as to most reasonable observers, the White House shows the chronic fatigue of a two-term presidency reaching its final year. Nonetheless, paranoia about what Bush and Co. are up to preys on the minds of many progressives, who have progressed, in this case at least, beyond reason.

BREAKING: FIDEL CASTRO IS DEAD

My cellphone has not stopped ringing for the past ten minutes. Various sources inform that an announcement will come within the next few minutes from the Cuban government on Cuban TV and media. Stay tuned and we'll see if we've been manipulated once again or if today is the birth date of Cuba's liberty.

Update: Here's the deal and what I know up to now, as of 1500 hours, August 24, 2007:

First, South Florida Law Enforcement is on alert. An EOC (Emergency Operations Center) has been set-up and manned somewhere in Homestead.

Im also told Local and State government agencies have food, bottled water, and other necessities - valued in the millions - stored and/or staged in Homestead at or near the EOC.

I am presently verifying whether Coast Guard and DHS and Border Patrol agencies are on high alert. (Verified 01445)

In a press statement released August 23rd, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) observes that persistent Congressional critics of American efforts in Iraq, faced with undeniable evidence of progress on the ground as a result of General Petraeus' counterinsurgency strategy, have now taken to attacking our allies in the Iraqi government as a means to question our presence and undermine our mission.

As Senator Lieberman rightfully points out, criticizing the Iraqi government for failing thus far to facilitate political reconciliation misses the point: al Qaeda and like-minded insurgent groups are using violence and terror to prevent such reconciliation, and we cannot lose sight of the need to confront their violent obstructionism.   Senator Lieberman deserves much praise for reminding us all that although the Iraqi government is not perfect, we cannot afford to scapegoat or abandon our allies, lest we leave Iraq in the hands of a true and grievous menace.

Think about what multiculturalism preaches with all its high-minded rhetoric. Then WATCH WHAT IT BRINGS ABOUT in real life. That is the distinction between focusing simply on behavior --or rhetoric, or intent--versus the consequences or outcome of behavior.

It is in the tribal and entitlement behavior that you begin to see the toxicity of this dogma; as well as the essential oppressive nature of the politically correct dictums that the religion of multiculturalism demands of us.

Having given up any objective standard by which to mediate the vastly different perspectives and world views that each disparate group brings to the table; having encouraged the cannibal and looter cultures to imagine they are as worthwhile as the producer and creator cultures; having abandoned reason altogether in favor of expressing some feel-good platitudes about a supposedly essential "need to belong" to one's race, tribe, religion or group first and foremost; the outcome is what Stephen Hicks refers to as "group balkinization" --with all its inevitable and inescapable disunity, disharmony and conflict.

President Bush's analogy to Iraq is not inaccurate, just incomplete. By Max Boot

Ever since the mid-1970s, critics of American military involvement have warned that any decision to deploy armed forces abroad--in Lebanon and El Salvador in the 1980s, in Kuwait, Somalia, and Kosovo in the 1990s, and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan--would result in "another Vietnam." Conversely, supporters of those interventions have adamantly resisted any Vietnam comparisons.

President George W. Bush boldly abandoned that template with his speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars on Wednesday. In a skillful bit of political jujitsu, he cited Vietnam not as evidence that the Iraq War is unwinnable, but to argue that the costs of giving up the fight would be catastrophic--just as they were in Southeast Asia.

Clinton Lied and People Did Die By Warner Todd Huston,

How the Left lies to themselves as well as the rest of us.

Anyone who is politically aware in this country, anyone who has taken the time to keep up on the news, can't help but to have run across one of the left's favorite bromides; "Bush lied, People Died." Not quite as well known, but as an adjunct to this doggerel, the left has also indulged in a bit of backward Clinton praising with the phrase "No one died when Clinton lied." This, however, is a lie in and of itself, and it's a perfect example of how the left lies to themselves and everyone around them.

One word best describes how the claim that Clinton's lies never hurt anyone is a blatant untruth. That one word is Kosovo. As Thomas E. Woods, Jr. reveals, Kosovo is the best-kept secret of the worst most murderous failure of the Clinton Administration.

In his new book "33 Questions About American History You're Not Supposed to Ask," Woods reveals some of the lies and destruction that was Clinton's decision to enter the civil war between the Serbs, Croats and Albanians in 1999.

Clinton's decision to enter the conflict was based on the lie that he was valiantly trying to stop the "genocide" of the Muslim population in Kosovo. There is no doubt that there was a lot of killing going on in that corner of the world at the time and that it was all a bad situation. But, genocide? Hardly.

Bill Clinton's Road to Moscow By Fedora :: FreeRepublic.com

During the 1992 campaign, Bill Clinton’s student protests and Moscow trip generated much controversy, but few answers. While Clinton’s government files from that era seemingly remain unavailable even today, there is at least more information available than in 1992. The public record reveals that Clinton’s social network and views on Vietnam were influenced by a pattern of contact between Communist agents and sympathizers and Clinton’s academic and political associates. This pattern is documented here through an analysis of Clinton’s antiwar activity up through the time he left Oxford in 1970. Included are quotations from a June 9, 1969 profile of Clinton by the Frederick, Maryland Post which does not seem to have been previously cited elsewhere.

Sick Michael Vick by Clint Van Zandt

Some are born into greatness, others fall into it or work hard to obtain it. Michael Vick was always a natural athlete, running circles around and through those who would get in his way. He drew national attention while playing at Virginia Tech and would become one of the highest paid professional football players of all times when he hit the ground running for the Atlantic Falcons. The number “7” would not only be on his jersey, but on millions of others sold around the world. Everyone wanted to be like “Mike.”

Number 7’s fall from greatness, like that of the Buffalo Bills # 32 (O.J. Simpson) would have more to do with his fumbles off the field than on. Vick initially protested his innocence when investigated by federal authorities for gambling on pit bull dog fights involving animals that he and his so-called friends raised and trained to maul and kill other dogs. He now, however, has seen the light and has agreed to plead guilty to these charges, but only after others involved in this criminal enterprise had already rolled over on their “friend” Vick. After all, first in gets the lighter sentence and the other men involved in this terrible “sport” were not going to take a bullet for Michael.

How Homegrown Terrorists Are Born By Judith Miller

Who becomes an Islamic terrorist and why? How does the transformation occur? Is the terrorist threat to Americans diminishing or growing? And how can law enforcement prevent terrorist strikes within the United States?

To these critical questions, the New York Police Department has proposed some controversial answers whose profound implications for police surveillance in New York have angered some Muslim activists and civil libertarians. A 90-page assessment, released last Wednesday, argues that the primary terrorist threat to New Yorkers—indeed, to all Americans—comes not from al-Qaida in Iraq or from the mountainous tribal region between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as the intelligence community in Washington asserted last month in its latest national intelligence estimate. Rather, the NYPD concludes, the main terrorist threat is increasingly homegrown.

But while the Founding Fathers instituted the census as a tool to safeguard the liberties of the Republic by making sure each person is properly represented numerically in the national legislature, as with many of the other institutions devised by these innovative political thinkers, this one is also being used to undermine the very nature of freedom itself.

A Response to ever more from Andrew Sullivan by Victor Davis Hanson

The last time I had a run-in with the frenetic Andrew Sullivan was in front of an audience at Columbia University. But that apparently has become Sullivan’s  modus operandi — in frenzied fashion to toss out slurs and then to grow silent when they are refuted.

Now he is angry that I, like dozens of others, referred to The New Republic’s Pvt. Scott Beauchamp as a fabulist that he is, and so tried to make the case that an opinion writer whose views he disagrees with is comparable to a war chronicler making up facts on ground around him as he goes along.

Unfortunately, the first program in the series, "God's Jewish Warriors," is one of the most grossly distorted programs to appear on mainstream American television in many years. It is false in its basic premise, established in the opening scene in which  Jewish (and Christian) religious fervency is equated with that of Muslims heard endorsing "martyrdom," or suicide-killing. There is, of course, no counterpart among Jews and Christians to the violent jihadist Muslim campaigns underway across the globe, either in numbers of perpetrators engaged or in the magnitude of death and destruction wrought.

But Carrie Lukas of the Independent Women's Forum says GreenStone Media, marketed as "talk the way women want," was a bad business plan.

"What has really fallen or has been disproven, with the end of GreenStone Media, is this idea that radical, leftist feminists like Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda speak for most women and know what women want," says Lukas. Who Is Allah? By Soeren Kern

Europeans love to mock the salience of religion in American society, but they won't be laughing for very long. The de-Christianization of Europe in the name of "tolerance" is rapidly driving the spiritually shiftless continent into the arms of Islam. And now, amidst the postmodern theological confusion that defines contemporary Europe, even Catholic clergy are jumping on the Islamomania bandwagon.

The latest post-Christian theological spectacle comes to us from the Netherlands (of Ayaan Hirsi Ali fame), where the Roman Catholic Bishop of Breda, Tiny Muskens, says he wants Christians to start calling God "Allah" because he believes such a gesture would promote "rapprochement between Christianity and Islam". CNN: God’s Gift to Religion By Steve Kellmeyer

Thank God CNN understands religion better than any of its ignorant adherents. We need CNN’s unparalleled interpretive skill to understand complex Jewish, Muslim and Christian issues. For instance, without CNN, we would never know:

. . . that during the last 30 years, each faith has exploded into a powerful political force, comprised of followers – “God’s warriors” – who share a deep dissatisfaction with modern society, and a fierce determination to place God and religion back into daily life and to the seats of power. Their political and cultural struggles to save the world from what they view as secular materialism, greed and sexual corruption have caused [sic] anger, division and fear.

You see? It isn’t secular humanism that causes problems. How could it be? Secular humanism has only been around since the Enlightenment, has only really gained traction in public culture with the growth of industrialization in the late 1800’s, and only had public advocates in the American political sphere in the latter half of the 20th century, that is, within the last thirty to fifty years.

I have never cared for Geraldo Rivera because I never considered him a real journalist. In his mind, we are wrong for being against ILLEGALS and we are wrong when we focus on the crimes they commit and the lives they take, lives he cavalierly dismisses. The Humanists were very candid in 1930 when C.F. Potter, founder of the N.Y. Humanist Society, proposed using your hard-earned tax dollars to destroy your religion and evangelize their religion. Think I’m kidding? Listen to what he wrote in his book “Humanism: a New Religion”:

“Education is a most powerful ally of Humanism & every American school is a school of Humanism. What can the theistic Sunday schools, meeting for an hour once a week, & teaching only a fraction of the children do to stem the tide of a five-day program of Humanistic religion teaching? So very Humanistic is modern education that no religion has a future unless it be Humanism. The religion of tomorrow in America & all the world may not be in all respects identical with the religious Humanism we are advocating in this book, but it will be mightily like it & of the same spirit.”

Federal Alphabet Soup Won’t Fix Schools By Andrew J. Coulson

President Bush signed the bi-partisan America COMPETES act on August 9th, with the acronymic goal of Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education and Science. Come September, Congress will debate reauthorization of the 5-year-old No Child Left Behind act, or NCLB, which aimed to improve math and reading performance. But before our federal representatives serve up another acronym-laden education program, Americans might want to signal for the waiter, because there’s a fly in Washington’s alphabet soup: these programs will not, indeed cannot, fix our schools.

The problem is best demonstrated by the America COMPETES act, which was inspired by the National Science Foundation report “Rising Above the Gathering Storm.” The NSF observed that “a substantial portion of our workforce finds itself in direct competition for jobs with lower-wage workers around the globe,” and argued that this intensifying competition from abroad now compels us to improve our schools.

To Be or Not to Be "American" By JB Williams

When one can walk down the streets of any major US city and see illegal invaders marching under a Mexican flag with signs written in Spanish that attack, insult and incite sovereign American citizens who simply want secure organized legal immigration for their country, people with no right to be here at all demanding their alleged "American" right not only to remain here, but to redesign America too, one must ask what kind of American they intend to be?

But the problem doesn’t begin here. This is just a visible symptom of a much bigger problem in 21st Century America.

When Muslims are allowed to march down Broadway in the heart of New York City in celebration of 9/11, honoring the terrorists who carried out the most brutal attacks on innocent civilians anywhere in the world, we must ask what kind of Americans these people are? We have a right and a responsibility to ask…

The "Invisible America" Hillary Never Sees By Christopher G. Adamo

No politician of recent decades could match the Clintons for sheer audacity and brazenness. Time and again, they appear in front of the cameras to declare an alternative reality, which Americans are then supposed to accept, based solely on the volume with which the Clintons shout its existence. Hillary's outrageous new campaign ad, which recently began airing in Iowa, stands as the latest example of the relentless and despicable Clinton political strategy.

In her ad, she seeks to sound alarms with the message "As I travel around America, I hear from so many people who feel like they're just invisible to their government. Americans from all walks of life across our country may be invisible to this president, but they're not invisible to me, and they won't be invisible to the next president of the United States."

1 Down, 11,999,999 to Go by Ann Coulter

Mickey Kaus has raised the intriguing possibility that, since Bush's amnesty plan went down to humiliating defeat once Americans got wind of what the elites had planned for us, the Bush administration might respond by intentionally targeting highly sympathetic illegal aliens for deportation "in as clumsy, heartless and lawsuit-inspiring a fashion as possible, in order to create the maximum number of negative headlines."

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff described anti-amnesty Americans as being satisfied with nothing less than "the death penalty" for illegal aliens and recently warned of "some unhappy consequences" unless illegal aliens were granted amnesty. Yes, that Michael Chertoff -- the guy in charge of keeping us safe from foreign invasions.

Illegal Aliens' Impact on American Jobs – Part II :: FSM

The mainstream media report ad nauseam that illegal aliens are doing work that Americans won’t do, but that is mostly because the compensation is artificially depressed and illegal aliens are the only ones who will do the work for such low wages. However, as noted in the Education report, it also probably has something to do with the very low education level of the vast majority of illegal aliens. In any case, illegal aliens are not just picking strawberries and cleaning toilets any more. It wasn't that long ago that being a dry-waller, brick-layer, house framer, painter, carpet layer, plumber, or electrician was a decently compensated, middle class trade. Now it is increasingly becoming the work for illegal aliens at far less than the free market rate. While illegal alien workers are only a small portion of many of those job categories, their willingness to work at dramatically lower rates artificially drags down the compensation for all workers.

The NEA Lists Its Goals, and the Democratic Party Agrees By Phyllis Schlafly

Some critics complain that the issue of education has been conspicuously absent from presidential television debates.  But Democratic presidential candidates did sound off with their pro-federal government, pro-spending policies at the annual convention of the National Education Association, and the nation's largest teachers union liked what they heard.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., told delegates that she will fight school vouchers "with every breath in my body."  Reiterating the message of her book "It Takes a Village," she called for universal preschool for 4-year-olds.  Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., likewise inveighed against "passing out vouchers."  Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., also announced his opposition to vouchers and proposed that the federal government pay college tuition for all students who will work 10 hours a week.

Wall Street Journal Lies About Sea Treaty By Cliff Kincaid

If and when Rupert Murdoch starts cleaning house at the Wall Street Journal, he ought to take a hard look at Neil King Jr., who has an article in the August 22 issue that completely misleads readers of the paper about the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), coming before the Senate next month. The thrust of the article is that the treaty is one of the most wonderful things in the world and that everybody is backing it except for a few conservatives.

This article, unfortunately, is typical of the liberal media treatment of the issue. It reflects everything that is wrong with the media today, including bias and laziness. King offers no facts about where the treaty came from. For example, how many people know that one of the brains behind the treaty was a Harvard Law Professor, Louis Sohn, who believed in world government? And that Sohn favored a world government with hundreds of thousands of troops, nuclear weapons, and military bases around the world? And that Sohn was a major influence on the current Yale Law School Dean who could become President Hillary Clinton's first nomination to the Supreme Court?

Diversity, Nihilism, and the Anti-Rational Mind By Gary Wolf

Contemporary Western society is tumbling further and further into the abyss of undifferentiated mediocrity. Much of the blame is due to the ideology of Diversity, which exploits a nihilistic, anti-rational strain in our culture.

The world is now divided into two zones: the zone of culture, and the zone of Diversity. In the former, which still covers most of the planet, there is true culture, organic and deeply rooted. It is also exclusive, to a greater or lesser extent. Even where the territory is shared, one is cognizant of the fact that the cultural space is divided into two or more organic cultures. They may be co-existing peacefully or they may be locked in a struggle to the death.

The immigrant’s Muslim faith forbids the depiction of humans. Every morning the poor man was confronted with the statue of the Madonna – an intolerable affront to his deeply-felt religious convictions. Consequently, yesterday morning the immigrant filled up the niche with concrete. Two elderly ladies were able to save the statue of the Holy Virgin, but two statues of little angels surrounding the Madonna were walled in by the zealous Moroccan.

Krikorian adopts Separationism, with a twist by Lawrence Auster

Writing at National Review Online, Mark Krikorian advocates what might be called Separationism Plus, or, more precisely, Separationism Leading to Mass Apostasy. He subscribes to the separationist idea, namely "the isolation of Islam from the rest of the world through military action, restrictions on immigration, and other means." It is in the "plus" area that he brings in something new. In my writings on the subject, I have suggested that an additional (though not crucial) benefit of Separationism might be that once we have isolated the Muslims in their own lands, they might in this hopeless and rejected state adopt Kemal-type regimes, in which Islam is removed from the public sphere of a formerly Muslim society. Krikorian disagrees, saying that even Kemalism would not be enough to eliminate the Muslim menace: Kemalism does not work in the long run, because it still leaves the underlying Islamic religion of the society in an intact state, whence it will inevitably arise again and seek public power, as is happening now in Turkey. Therefore, Krikorian concludes, the ultimate desideratum of Separationism is that the isolated and rejected Muslim world abandon Islam itself.

I posted at The Corner recently that radical Islam will only be defeated when Muslims see for themselves the bankruptcy of Islam as a modern political ideology by living under Islamic regimes, like that of Iran. So our widely shared strategic objective of discrediting political Islam is undermined by our tactical efforts at preventing the establishment of Islamic regimes.

Nuking the terrorists By Joseph Farah

When I proposed adopting a national deterrent policy against nuclear terrorism, I knew it would upset some people.

There are some understandable reasons:

(A) No one really wants to consider the distinct possibility – some would say probability – of a nuclear terrorist attack on America.

(B) Few in the American body politick today can conceive of any circumstance in which they would unleash the deadly force of nuclear weapons again.

(C) Many Americans think that a nuclear deterrent policy, one in which we let the enemy know what's coming in a worst-case scenario, is immoral because it sounds like anyone proposing it is calling for the deaths of millions.

(D) Most Americans have already forgotten Sept. 11, 2001, or, six years later, consider it a one-of-a-kind event that will never be repeated, certainly not on an even grander scale.

(E) Some people, perhaps superstitiously, believe talking about horrible possibilities and scenarios and planning for them make them more likely to happen.

Nevertheless, talk about them and plan for them we must.

Who The Liberals Really Are by Monica Crowley

When the Democrats tell you who they are, what they think, and what they intend to do, believe them. When they claim (with Oscar-worthy straight faces) they “support the troops,” their history-- both past and recent -- betrays that vacuous claim.

Last week, Senator Barack Obama made his third big mistake, the result of a series of on-the-fly policy pronouncements. Mistake Number One was his statement that he’d move more aggressively into Pakistan if, as president, he had “actionable intelligence” about al Qaeda operating there. The statement itself was quite hawkish, so the mistake wasn’t on the policy, it was political: he ticked off his liberal base, which does not want escalated military action in Pakistan, or frankly, anywhere else. Mistake Number Two came when he tried to fix Mistake Number One: he said he’d take nuclear weapons “off the table.” This brought him back into the liberal lovenest, but just about everyone else thought it was “naïve and irresponsible.”

Popping the Left’s Internet bubble. By Jonah Goldberg

The government and the corporate media,” declares a prominent activist website, have created a “propaganda machine whose goal is to continue the expansion of a (fascist) state and to control every aspect of our lives and fortunes.”

Sounds like any one of a bajillion posts on a left-wing “netroots” website these days, right?

Wrong. It’s from 1998. And I cheated a little. I’ve doctored the quote. “Fascist” was originally “collective.” The activist website? The populist-conservative FreeRepublic.com.

The short history of the Internet is already long enough to repeat itself. In dog years, I’m 288, but in Internet years, I’m Methuselah. I was the founding editor of National Review Online in 1998 (and before that, I worked down the hall from this quirky Microsoft start-up called Slate).

Back in those days, when the Internet ran on a series of pneumatic tubes and hemp-rope pulleys, conservatives were patting themselves on the back for seizing the commanding heights of the digital frontier. The argument was that because the Liberal Industrial Complex maintained a stranglehold on the Old Media, conservatives had, with ninja-like stealth, mastered the fledgling forms: direct mail, talk radio, cable news, and, now, Al Gore’s newfangled invention, the Internet.

The Real Problem Facing America :: GOPublius

Over at howtostart.org an author opines that the problem with America is government and the party system:

The biggest problem in America today is not George W. Bush, but he does give it a face. The biggest problem in America today is that the party line has been drawn over our lives, drawn down the center of the nation, drawn through our homes and families. Rather than Republicans and Democrats agreeing on a vision of America but disagreeing on the means to achieve it, the two parties point their fingers, call their opponents names, and declare the other side unpatriotic. The Republicans are running on a platform of “the Democrats will destroy America”, while the Democrats do practically nothing at all, proud to not be Republicans. And we, the people, call them leaders. We, the people, elected them. We, the people, make their jobs easy because we, the people whom they have sworn to serve, don’t question them.

 No, you are incorrect.

The first major success of liberal netroots activism occurred during last year’s Democrat Senate primary in Connecticut. They prepared the battlefield in incumbent Joe Lieberman’s loss to über-liberal challenger Ned Lamont. The most influential of the netroots groups was MoveOn.Org. Conservative By Default: Black Warmongers and Pseudo-Conservatives By Elizabeth Wright

The passage of just a few short years has made it hard to remember when only the views blessed by the progressive left found a path into the public arena. And, although modern liberalism still prevails as society's dominating force, by the year 2007, much has changed when it comes to the ability to disseminate and broadcast other political messages. For close to four decades, the subject of race, especially, was locked down tight. In public discourse, one was expected to be racially-correct, as only the most sympathetic approach to the subject was tolerated. A form of self-censorship became the norm.

Americans were exhorted to celebrate the "multicultural" benefits of living in a land where the oxymoron "diversity is strength" was promoted like a holy creed. There was no room for contradiction, and it was not unusual for critics of this politically correct persuasion to run for cover, as they sought to protect themselves from the negative consequences of seeming out of step with the racial orthodoxy.

Among blacks themselves strict rules prevailed, fostered by the black establishment, an elite determined to extract concessions from "the system." Dissemble, obfuscate, and lie, when necessary, pretty much summed up the rule of thumb by which blacks were expected to abide. Don't admit to the most blatant facts about a deteriorating social culture mired in crime and poverty. Defend, and then defend some more, no matter the reality of the worst pathologies, which the weakest eye could observe and the simplest mind detect.

The tyranny of science by David Warren

As Paul Feyerabend, one of my scientific heroes, wrote in his 1975 essay, How to defend Society against Science: “In society at large the judgement of the scientist is received with the same reverence as the judgement of bishops and cardinals was accepted not too long ago. Science has now become as oppressive as the ideologies it had once to fight. Do not be misled by the fact that today hardly anyone gets killed for joining a scientific heresy. This has nothing to do with science. It has something to do with the general quality of our civilization. Heretics in science are still made to suffer from the most severe sanctions this relatively tolerant civilization has to offer.”

Likewise Freeman Dyson, whose most recent book, Many Coloured Glass, is only the latest fruit of a lifetime of dangerously independent thinking, in which he has shamelessly crossed over from one scientific speciality to another—as all the great scientists of history did. He devotes a robust chapter to cataloguing the marvellous accomplishments of men who refused to be intimidated by the dull, heavy hand of professional authority in his own time. And he adds today:

Homo-expect-us: Imposing Values on Christians by Selwyn Duke

There is a maelstrom brewing around High Point Church in Arlington, Texas. Church officials had offered to host a funeral for a homosexual man, Cecil Sinclair, even going so far as to agree to feed 100 guests and create an elaborate photo presentation about the man's life. However, the family neglected to inform the church that Mr. Sinclair's homosexuality would be featured prominently, with pictures containing obvious homosexual content on display. Understandably, the church would not be party to the exhibition of sin, and its offer was rescinded.

The family is mad, some of the media is mad, and I'm mad too. What irks me, though, is an invidious double-standard: Homosexuals and their sympathizers often expect a special dispensation from rules that apply to everyone else, while Christians are expected to dispense with their rules.

Back on July 29th, the New York Times published an article that was ostensibly supposed to be a book review(1) even as the first half of the long piece was an anti-Bush, ant-war-on-terror political rant. The byline was credited to Samantha Powers, who, as the Times somewhat benignly defined her, is a "professor of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard." But, Power is far from a mere lefty Harvard professor because in the past she was a duly paid member of Senator Obama's staff and is still a key foreign policy adviser to this day for his campaign for president. In fact, when Obama's shallow foreign policy experience was attacked in the press recently, she was the one who wrote a long apologia(2) that was sent to media outlets to staunch the bleeding of the Obama campaign. Why the Times did not fully identify her as an interested party in a political campaign and instead painted her as just a "professor" is hard to understand. It's doubtful they'd ever give such cover to a Republican operative.

“There is only the Fight” By Andrew Walden

Hillary Clinton has a written life plan, but there have been only two copies available to the public—until now. Written in 1969, and kept under lock and key during her years as First Lady, Hillary’s Wellesley College senior thesis has only been readable in person at the campus library and in a single microfilm copy made available to individual researchers on inter-library loan. Clinton lawyers have previously blocked people who sought to make it public.

A read of the 92-page thesis, titled “There is only the Fight, An Analysis of the Alinsky model” makes it clear why the Clintons wanted this document suppressed. Hillary doesn’t just want to pass laws or implement policy. Hillary explains: “If the ideals Alinsky espouses were actualized, the result would be social revolution.” Somehow, recent articles on the thesis by the Washington Post, Boston Globe and MSNBC all missed this little detail.

It sounds so nice, so brimming with hope and cheer: “Christians will join with more than 35,000 Muslims for fellowship and conversation.” Thus says the National Council of Churches’ (NCC) announcement that its Interfaith Relations office will sponsor an Ecumenical Study Seminar for “reflecting and learning together” at the 44th annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which will be held in Rosemont, Illinois at the end of August.

You may reasonably ask, of course, exactly what ISNA is. Could it possibly be, as the foregoing announcement seems to imply, a group of genuinely moderate Muslims that finally has stepped forward to collaborate with a Christian organization in a spirit of mutual acceptance and respect?

Not on your life.

Happy Surge Day! By Ben Johnson

Did you know the surge in Iraq just reached full strength? If not, you’re not alone. Congressional leadership declared it a failure four months ago. On April 19, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, “this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything.” He added he felt no remorse for calling the troops losers while they continued to fight for victory. “[M]y conscience is great,” he said (which speaks volumes about his conscience). On June 13, the other side of the Capitol chimed in. Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (my hands tremble at the very words) co-signed a letter to President Bush, stating, “As many had foreseen, the escalation has failed to produce the intended results.”

The trouble with these damning declamations of defeat is that the surge had not yet reached full strength. We know Congressional Democrats say they oppose preemptive war, but apparently they endorse preemptive surrender.

Globalist Treachery By Paul R. Hollrah

It was early April 1997 when I received a frantic telephone call from Washington. “You need to get on your horse and get here ASAP. We have a job to do...a very big job.”

As it was explained, the US patent system was under attack by a coalition of globalist forces including the President and Vice President of the United States, the congressional leadership (Republican and Democrat), the Japanese government, the Chinese government, the National Association of Manufacturers, and eighty or ninety of America’s largest multinational corporations, including Microsoft, IBM, Motorola, and scores of others. It was, arguably, the most powerful alliance ever assembled to achieve a specific political goal.

Their goal was the destruction of the US patent system and our job was to stop them.

The United States is the only nation on Earth where the private ownership of intellectual property is provided for in its national Constitution (Article I, Section 8.8). According to Thomas Jewett in, Thomas Jefferson: Father of Invention, “Jefferson felt that science and invention were the most certain means of advancing social progress and human happiness...” He was right. And it is the US patent system that has been the primary “engine” of the US economy since Jefferson issued the first US patent in July 1790.

So why would any American participate in such an effort? We suspected that, in the case of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, their support was payback for the hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal contributions that the Chinese military pumped into the Clinton-Gore reelection campaign and the Democratic National Committee a year earlier.

FRANCE'S PRO-U.S. TURN ON IRAQ By Amir Taheri

ONE key promise that Nicolas Sarkozy had made during his presidential election campaign last spring was to "correct foreign-policy mistakes" made by his predecessor Jacques Chirac.

Chief among these was Chirac's desperate efforts to prevent Iraq's liberation from Saddam Hussein's regime of terror. Chirac failed to save his friend's regime but managed to sour relations with the United States, Great Britain and more than 40 other democracies that joined the Coalition of the Willing to liberate Iraq in 2003.

Sarkozy's moves to correct the mistake started before his election, when he met President Bush at the White House in 2006 and described Chirac's policy as "arrogant."

The Color of Crime By Patrick J. Buchanan

The execution-style murder of three African-American college students in Newark, N.J., forced to kneel and shot in the head -- allegedly by an illegal alien from Peru who was out on bail for the serial rape of a 5-year-old -- has the makings of a Willie Horton issue in 2008.

Newark, like New York, is a "sanctuary city," where cops are not to ask criminal suspects if they are in the country legally. Mitt Romney has been hammering Rudy Giuliani on the issue, trashing his tough-cop resume by painting the mayor as den mother of the Big Apple's playpen for illegal aliens.

The arrest of Jose Carranza in that Newark massacre, amid reports he had Hispanic accomplices and the murders may have been part of a gang initiation, has also elevated the issue of the black-brown war raging in U.S. big cities.

In the Aug. 10 Washington Post story that covered the Carranza arrest, the same page had two related articles. One was headlined, "Study: Almost Half of Murder Victims Black," the other, "Slaying of Popular Editor Stuns Blacks in Oakland."

The End Of Obama By Otto at The Otto Show

Presidential candidate Barack Obama, the great black hype, is (un)officially washed up. After declaring today that he is done with debates, Obama’s slick ride has come to an end. That’s what happens when your entire candidacy is built on hype and smooth talk. When time comes to actually open your mouth and let people into your mind, there is no where to go but down.

I’ve commended Obama in the past for being the only serious Democratic candidate who could actually be proud of his anti-war stance - he has opposed the Iraq war since the very beginning, unlike his counterparts who either can’t decide where they stand on the war (Hillary) or believe that their own selfish contributions to the war can be swept under the rug (Edwards). Obama was against the Iraq war before it was cool to be so.

The Islamic Brotherhood Academy :: Gates of Vienna

With the Kahlil Gibran International Academy (KGIA) in Brooklyn scheduled to open in ten days, controversy over the Arabic-language high school continues to burn white-hot in New York City.

The longer the issue stays out in the open, the more telling are the details that emerge about KGIA and its supporters. With each rock turned over by Stop the Madrassa, a new succession of grotesque creatures emerges.

The latest discovery to see the light of day is a member of the KGIA Advisory Council, Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid, who hails from the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem. Daniel Pipes has this to say about Abdur-Rashid and the MIB:

Hillary Rodham Queeg By Jeffrey Lord

The story of Navy Lieutenant Commander Philip Francis Queeg is one of literature and film's more compelling. Queeg was at the center of author Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Caine Mutiny. Played by the legendary Humphrey Bogart in the Oscar-nominated 1954 film, the tale of the unstable captain of the old minesweeper USS Caine and his tumultuous command of the ship and its World War II-weary crew is today a classic.

It is also an instructive illumination about what happens when the symptoms that repeatedly show a human being unfit for command are deliberately ignored. If in fact New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the Democratic presidential nomination, the Queeg Factor will take center stage as an issue in the 2008 presidential election.

New York Times Covers for CAIR, Again By Steven Emerson

In what has become practically a routine, whenever bad publicity for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) surfaces, in an almost Pavlovian response, the New York Times leaps to its defense.

As I wrote about last March in The New Republic, when CAIR had befallen several embarrassing public setbacks, including the rescinding of an award from Sen. Barbara Boxer’s office and public opposition on Capitol Hill for the use of a room to host a CAIR event, the Times dispatched its reporter, Neil MacFarquhar, to resuscitate CAIR’s image.

An Investment in Failure By Thomas Sowell

It is not just in Iraq that the political left has an investment in failure. Domestically as well as internationally, the left has long had a vested interest in poverty and social malaise.

The old advertising slogan, "Progress is our most important product," has never applied to the left. Whether it is successful black schools in the United States or Third World countries where millions of people have been rising out of poverty in recent years, the left has shown little interest.

Progress in general seems to hold little interest for people who call themselves "progressives." What arouses them are denunciations of social failures and accusations of wrong-doing.

One wonders what they would do in heaven.

Liberal States Engaging in Anarchy For Illegals By Sher Zieve

Showing once again that the will of the American people and the laws of the United States of America mean less than nothing to them, liberals and leftists have found a viable way to accomplish their continuing planned destruction of America—without the pesky practice of including the voting electorate. They have declared and established “sanctuary cities”, where the rule of law is no longer practiced or even encouraged. In fact, if certain laws are followed, said law-followers are subject to firing—if not arrest. New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Cambridge, Baltimore and a growing number of other liberal and leftist-run cities have now been joined by the defiant pro-illegals faction in New Haven, Connecticut. And no one from the federal government appears to be doing anything—whatsoever—about these growing lawless and anarchistic hordes. In fact, as many members of the current administration seem to strongly support the illegals’ position, it is the illegals—not US citizens—who are given special considerations to not be required to uphold the laws of this country.

Vlad The Impaler :: INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

Vladimir Putin announces the resumption of strategic bomber patrols as it prepares to display its military prowess at the Moscow Air Show. The Russian military machine is back in business.

The MiG-35 and MiG-29 fighter aircraft that Russia plans to showcase at the MAKS-2007 Air Show in the suburban town of Zhukovsky, Russia, Aug. 21 to 26 are only a small part of the five-year, $189 billion military modernization plan under way. Russia is planning to double combat aircraft production by 2025 with new nuclear missiles, aircraft carriers and other goodies on Moscow's shopping list.

Last Friday, Putin officially announced the resumption of long-range strategic bomber patrols that were common during the Cold War but that disappeared after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

How to Defeat Islam By Tom Snodgrass

To defeat stateless Jihadi groups like al-Qaeda and the Taliban, we must jettison our Cold War national security thinking featuring limited war and instead realistically reassume our World War II strategic offensive posture.

The framework for war

Today a debate rages. Part of the debate, certainly the most immediate component of the debate, is what to do with Iraq. To cut-and-run seems unthinkable when one considers the consequences. To stay and pursue existing strategies seems almost as unthinkable given the corrosive effects domestically and the lack of American will for another long drawn out war with no real end in sight. The other part of this debate concerns itself with the larger or more strategic aspects: Are we at war? Who exactly is the enemy? Can we win this war as a war?

But, precisely because people engage in “debates” predicated upon loosely or poorly grounded “opinions,” I have over the past year attempted to provide some clear theoretically grounded judgments on these questions. This essay is an attempt to summarize those judgments.

The West in the 21st Century — Developed or Developing Nations? By Fjordman

In the debate regarding how the relationship between the Old West, Europe, and the New West, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, will be in the 21st century, many observers seem to take for granted that much of Europe will fall to Islam, and that native Europeans will flee and resettle in the New West. There is, however, another scenario that is theoretically possible, but little discussed. What if the opposite happens? There are Europeans emigrating/fleeing to these nations already now, but I think they will discover once there that the problems they are fleeing from are already present in their new homelands. Some of them are even worse there, especially since many of those fleeing will be white, and they will discover that whites are rapidly diminishing as a factor in these countries and that hostility towards whites is rising.

Nationalists Versus Islamists: The Middle East's Core Issue By Prof. Barry Rubin

The Middle East is in a new era, very different from the politics and strategic situation we have been used to for so long. For 55 years the region has lived under Arab nationalist dominance. Every Arab regime, except perhaps Sudan, is Arab nationalist, governed by that basic system and world view. Of course, these regimes have governed badly, not keeping pledges to unite the Arab world, minimize Western influence, destroy Israel, or bring rapid social and economic progress. Still, they know how to stay in power.
Remember that the last real regime change from within an Arab state happened 37 years ago when Hafiz al-Asad seized power in Syria. Since then, surprisingly little has changed in Arab ideology, political structure, economic organization, or society.
It has also been 28 years since Iran's Islamist revolution took power in 1979. Since then--though not solely because of that event--Islamism has been on the upsurge. Certainly, it also suffered setbacks, and almost three decades later Islamism had been unable to seize power anywhere, at least until Hamas's recent triumph in Gaza.

Eroding sovereignty :: CSP

A likely upshot of President Bush's meetings this week with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts in Montebello, Canada will be a further impetus to the effort to engage in what is euphemistically called the "harmonization" of the three countries' economies, regulatory systems and policies.  The effect will be to contribute to what is on track to become one of the most worrying legacies of the George W. Bush presidency: a significant, and possibly irreversible, erosion in the Nation's sovereignty.

Multiculturalism's War on Education By Elan Journo

Back to school nowadays means back to classrooms, lessons and textbooks permeated by multiculturalism and its championing of "diversity." Many parents and teachers regard multiculturalism as an indispensable educational supplement, a salutary influence that "enriches" the curriculum. But is it?

With the world's continents bridged by the Internet and global commerce, multiculturalism claims to offer a real value: a cosmopolitan, rather than provincial, understanding of the world beyond the student's immediate surroundings. But it is a peculiar kind of "broadening." Multiculturalists would rather have students admire the primitive patterns of Navajo blankets, say, than learn why Islam's medieval golden age of scientific progress was replaced by fervent piety and centuries of stagnation.

Leaf through a school textbook and you'll find that there is a definite pattern behind multiculturalism's reshaping of the curriculum. What multiculturalists seek is not the goal they advertise, but something else entirely. Consider, for instance, the teaching of history.

Grassroots Conservative Majority - A conservative political blog » Featured ArticleAl Qaeda’s Travel Agent Damascus International Airport is a hub for terrorists

"The United States is at last making significant progress against al Qaeda in Iraq–but the road to victory now requires cutting off al Qaeda’s road to Iraq through Damascus. Thanks to Gen. David Petraeus’s new counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq, and the strength and skill of the American soldiers fighting there, al Qaeda in Iraq is now being routed from its former strongholds in Anbar and Diyala provinces. Many of Iraq’s Sunni Arabs, meanwhile, are uniting with us against al Qaeda, alienated by the barbarism and brutality of their erstwhile allies. As Gen. Petraeus recently said of al Qaeda in Iraq: “We have them off plan.” But defeating al Qaeda in Iraq requires not only that we continue pressing the offensive against its leadership and infrastructure inside the country. We must also aggressively target its links to “global” al Qaeda and close off the routes its foreign fighters are using to get into Iraq. Recently declassified American intelligence reveals just how much al Qaeda in Iraq is dependent for its survival on the support it receives from the broader, global al Qaeda network, and how most of that support flows into Iraq through one country–Syria. U.S. political climate ripe for grassroots groups :: Reuters

"PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kansas (Reuters) - Jennifer Roe considers herself a typical American mom -- juggling a part-time writing job with the needs of two young daughters, volunteer work at a children's museum and her church. Indeed, the 'Proud to be a Liberal' button on the visor of her minivan is one of the few outward signs that 42-year-old Roe also squeezes in several hours a week organizing True Blue Women, a political group of like-minded moms. 'A lot of it for me was feeling the country was going down the wrong path,' said Roe. 'I felt everybody, including myself, had gotten a little complacent. Just going to vote is not enough.'"
