MEDIA AND MEDIOCRITY: I was listening to an interview on a public radio station with a PBS producer freshly returned from Iran. He was stressing what a "normal" place it was, and how when he visited a mosque, it was just like "Lutherans worshipping in the Midwest."

Except, of course, that "Death to Israel!" was scrawled on one wall of the mosque.

But his "guide" helpfully explained: “That's just the way we Iranians talk. Like if we're stuck in traffic, we say: 'Death to traffic!'"

Oh, of course. No worries.

A longtime and well-known Iran expert remarked to me: "The damage that has been done to our understanding of Iran by innocents abroad is very large."
