Kirkpatrick announced that the “conservative Christian political movement” today shows signs of “coming apart beneath its leaders.” And this, we were told, when “just three years ago,” by Kirkpatrick’s reckoning, “the leaders of this movement could almost see the Promised Land.”

In his opinion Wednesday for a five-justice majority in Kennedy v. Louisiana, Justice Anthony Kennedy ruled that the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of “cruel and unusual punishments” forbids imposition of the death penalty for the rape of a child. Or, rather, he ruled that the Court’s modern rewriting of the Eighth Amendment as a license for the Court to impose its “independent judgment” of “the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society” yields that result. If any further evidence were needed that the Supreme Court’s death-penalty decisions have become entirely unmoored from the actual Eighth Amendment — as well as from the good sense of the American people — Kennedy’s opinion provides it.

Not surprisingly, he demonized those who question his beliefs about global warming. Like many before him, he was over-the-top in protecting his beloved world view. Ellen Goodman equates skeptics with holocaust deniers. Al Gore uses the flat earth society as his comparison, while assuring us that the “debate is over”.

One of the incessant messages circulated by the media is the idea that all of the young voters of America are passionate supporters of Barack Obama. This is assertion of course is wildly overstated. In fact every time I hear the comment, "that the youth of America are trending to the left in large numbers" it begins to get my blood boiling. Barack Obama stepped in it this time or sat behind it, that is. Sitting at a short rostrum at a meeting with Democrat governors, Barack Obama launched the “seal” of his campaign. His image makers figure that if they want him to look presidential and not like a little kid who is not ready for prime time -- they created something that looked like the Seal of the President of the United States. Amid a brewing scandal over special mortgage deals given to two U.S. senators, Politico last week asked the offices of all 100 senators to describe the circumstances under which they obtained their own home loans. Seventy-seven senators have complied so far. Twenty-three have not.
Senators are not required to report in their disclosure forms any financial information about their homes unless they draw rental income from the home. But in the wake of questions regarding mortgages obtained by Sens. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) — loans they received through a VIP program run by Countrywide Financial Corp. — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said that the disclosure rules should be changed so that senators’ mortgage details are made public.

Some have been taking issue with largely unnoticed comments made last year by Sen. Barack Obama declaring the U.S. is "no longer a Christian nation" but is also a nation of others, including Muslims and nonbelievers.

Israel isn't famous for welcoming public scrutiny of its most sensitive military plans. But we doubt Jerusalem officials were dismayed to see news of their recent air force exercises splashed over the front pages of the Western press.
Those exercises – reportedly involving about 100 fighters, tactical bombers, refueling planes and rescue helicopters – were conducted about 900 miles west of Israel's shores in the Mediterranean. Iran's nuclear facilities at Bushehr, Isfahan and Natanz all fall roughly within the same radius, albeit in the opposite direction. The point was not lost on Tehran, which promptly warned of "strong blows" in the event of a pre-emptive Israeli attack.

The outpouring of tributes to Tim Russert on his death at age 58 was both surprising and well deserved. There was a palpable sense of guilt in the many descriptions of him by his colleagues in the commentariat. They frequently seemed to be saying that he was such a genuine human being uncompromised by stardom when the rest of them, having achieved only a small measure of his success, had become phonies of one kind of another. True, there were a few curmudgeons, such as Michael Kinsley, who accused Russert of “downward social climbing,” of playing the good ol’ boy shtick for all it was worth. As the show business adage has it, Once you’ve learned to fake sincerity, the rest comes easy. I don’t believe that about Tim Russert.

Three Ohio men were convicted very recently of plotting to recruit and train terrorists to kill American soldiers in Iraq. The case was put together with help from a former soldier who posed as someone who wanted to help.

However, they won't drill in ANWAR, they wouldn't lift the ban on offshore drilling and they wouldn't support nuclear power. As Morton Kondracke pointed out on Hugh Hewitt this afternoon, they have tried to counter the public surge of opinion in favor of offshore drilling by an appeal that the oil companies are "sitting" on 68 million acres of "idle" leases. Mind you, these are leases for which the oil companies have spent billions of dollars on federal bids and annual rentals, and which by their terms terminate if they are not developed within a specific number of years.
