That's where Sarah Steelman, the state treasurer, is running in an Aug. 5 primary for the Missouri governorship. Oklahoma Rebellion by Walter Williams

One of the unappreciated casualties of the War of 1861, erroneously called a Civil War, was its contribution to the erosion of constitutional guarantees of state sovereignty. It settled the issue of secession, making it possible for the federal government to increasingly run roughshod over Ninth and 10th Amendment guarantees. A civil war, by the way, is a struggle where two or more parties try to take over the central government. Confederate President Jefferson Davis no more wanted to take over Washington, D.C., than George Washington wanted to take over London. Both wars are more properly described as wars of independence.

Barack Obama's aides have removed criticism of President Bush's increase of troops to Iraq from the campaign Web site, part of an effort to update the Democrat's written war plan to reflect changing conditions.
One could put that differently, of course: now that Obama's position has definitively been proved wrong, he is trying to slink away without anyone noticing. But the AP does a decent job of putting Obama's about-face in context:

OPEC (SAUDIS) AMONGST THE OIL SPECULATORS By Judith A. Klinghoffer

Sunday, author of Zoom and Economist reporter, Vijay Vaitheeswaran told the nation’s governors that pampered oil companies R&D budget is a meager 1/3% compared to 15% of a technology company. Why so? Because under the current protected conditions they are doing fine and see no reason to change. They are not sure that there is a real energy shortage and, therefore, they worry that the moment their investment in new technologies is going to bear fruit, the Saudis will pull the rug from under them by flooding the market with cheap oil in the manner they did in the Eighties and earlier this decade. I heard a similar assessment from a top Exxon officials a couple of years ago. Apparently, oil executives see little reason to change their minds.

A sinister story about America’s left-winged dictatorship By Jonathan Kay

Great story from NPR this week about the freakishly high number of American presidents who are left-handed. If you add in Obama/McCain (both of whom are lefties), five of the seven most recent U.S. presidents will be left-handed (as of January, 2009).

This is astounding when you consider that left-handers appear in the population at the rate of only about 10-15%. So, statistically, one would expect to have a left-handed president only about once per half-century.

Would You Hire a President Who Padded His Resume? by Jennifer Rubin

Barack Obama has a solution to his lack of accomplishment and experience: pad his resume. If resume fraud were a crime, Obama would be looking at fifteen to life. And it is not just an isolated incident or two. He is a repeat offender.

Obama started early. Even the New York Times acknowledges that in his book Dreams From My Father Obama accomplished little as a “community organizer.” (”It is clear that the benefit of those years to Mr. Obama dwarfs what he accomplished.”) But he did manage to steal credit for asbestos testing and removal in the Altgeld Gardens, a public housing project in Chicago. But he didn’t quite tell the whole story. The Times writes:

Obama, Shaman By Michael Knox Beran

In the patois of punditry, “charismatic” has come to mean little more than “like a rock star.” But the striking thing about the charismatic leader is the extent to which his followers regard him as a healer of wounds, an alleviator of pain. In this sense, surely, Senator Barack Obama is charismatic. The carefully knotted ties and the dark, conservatively tailored suits only accentuate the exoticness of his shamanism; he has entered the American psyche not as a hero but as a healer.

A group of young pro-illegal alien protesters repeatedly beats an effigy of Arpaio as Isabel Garcia–local reconquistadora and an official from the Pima County legal defender’s office–eggs them on. She then parades around with the effigy’s head as onlookers cheer and hoist up the rest of the battered body.

For months, many of America's spies could not do their jobs: the legal authority they need to effectively monitor the communications of foreign terrorists operating on foreign soil had expired. Critical intelligence was being lost - as non-partisan professionals attested and as was confirmed by expert lawmakers, including not just Republican hawks but also several leading Democrats (e.g. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller and moderate House "Blue Dog" Democrats).

But MoveOn.org, the ACLU and their allies in the House (in particular House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) blocked a congressional vote on new legislation that would have restored the authority the intelligence agencies had lost. To be absolutely clear: They blocked the vote because they knew the bill would pass.

WHAT GLOBAL WARMING? By: Phil Brennan

Fact: All history reveals that time after time this planet of ours has experienced periods of warming and periods of cooling. A century of slight global warming, about half a degree, ended in 1998.

Fact: In this century a global cooling has set in. In 2008 most of the northern hemisphere, except for Western Europe, is coming out of what most scientists say has been the harshest winter in decades.

Malta, Israel, China and India's New Delhi have been subjected to record low temperatures. In Afghanistan, more than 900 people and 316,000 head of cattle died as a result of bitter cold weather according to Reuters.

Jihad and Outreach to Islamic Supremacist Groups By Jeffrey Imm

One of the most critical aspects of a strategic battle against the ideology behind Jihad, Islamic supremacism, is an honest definition of the term "civil rights and civil liberties." "Civil rights" are based on the American value of equality - that all men and women are created equal - a value that Islamic supremacism as an ideology does not embrace. So when federal government agencies claim to be making outreach efforts to organizations that espouse and/or support Islamic supremacist viewpoints -- such outreach efforts are actually contrary to America values of "civil rights," not promoting "civil rights."

The New Case Against Immigration, Both Legal and Illegal by Mark Krikorian

We've all heard the laments: "My grandpa from Sicily learned English, and my grandma from Minsk got by without welfare. So what's the problem with immigrants today?"

As Mark Krikorian argues in this provocative book, what's different today is not the immigrants, but us. Today's immigrants are very similar to those of a century ago, but they are coming to a very different America -- one where changes in the economy, society, and government create fundamentally different incentives for newcomers. In other words, the America that our grandparents came to no longer exists. And this simple fact must become the new starting point for the explosive debate about immigration policy.

She’s an all-too-familiar figure in today’s media landscape: the baby-faced nymphet with the preternaturally voluptuous curves, the one whose scantily clad body gyrates in music videos, poses provocatively on teen magazine covers, and populates cinema and television screens around the globe. She’s become a fixture in Western pop culture: we all know her various incarnations, from Gidget to Miley Cyrus, from Brooke Shields’ child prostitute in Pretty Baby to Jon Benét Ramsey. She’s been ardently celebrated and stridently censured, and she serves as a symbolic flashpoint for raging debates about gender, sexuality, the definition of childhood, and the criteria for social standards of acceptability.

Are Terrorists Manipulating Our Markets? By FRANK RYAN

Congress is investigating oil speculators, bank stocks are being pummeled, and housing prices are dropping precipitously in certain markets. And this is the good news.

I was always taught in my graduate and undergraduate classes that markets are rational, but after looking at the current market valuation of bank stocks, one must seriously consider if our markets are being manipulated.

Mr. Obama: Don't Betray My People By Amil Imani

It looks like Mr. Obama may well be the next resident of the White House. It also looks like my people are going to be betrayed once again by a badly misguided American president. Jimmy Carter helped give birth to the virulent Shiite Islamism by forbidding the Shah of Iran to crush the bloodthirsty Ayatollah Khomeini and his band of rabid Islamists. Now, Mr. Obama intends to confer legitimacy on the illegitimate child, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Jimmy Carter, the self-appointed touring ambassador of bad-mouthing America must be rejoicing in the prospect of Mr. Obama's presidency. Mr. Obama holds the promise of not only carrying on the Carterian misguided policies, but taking them to their very ruinous end.

We Shall Not Weary, We Shall Not Rest

Once again this year, the National Right to Life convention is partly a reunion of veterans from battles past and partly a youth rally of those recruited for the battles to come. And that is just what it should be. The pro-life movement that began in the 20th century laid the foundation for the pro-life movement of the 21st century. We have been at this a long time, and we are just getting started. All that has been and all that will be is prelude to, and anticipation of, an indomitable hope.

DISEMPOWERING GOD By Alan Stang

How did we get where we are? As I write, it looks as if our next President could be a mulatto named Hussein, raised as a Muslim, most of whose family is Muslim – who says in one of his books that when the feces hit the fan he will side with Islam – a man who may not even be a natural born American, a man who may be bi-sexual, a man who could be a member of the Communist Party. That all this could happen so soon after Nine Eleven is stark proof that we are in the midst of a revolution that has driven us insane.

Inhofe: EPA too powerful, could damage economy By JIM MYERS

While others criticized the Bush administration's inaction on greenhouse gases, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe warned Friday that it has put in place a scenario that will bankrupt the U.S. economy.

A key player in the years-long debate over climate change, the Oklahoma Republican agreed that using the Clean Air Act to put new regulations in place would be an unprecedented expansion of the Environmental Protection Agency's authority that would impact every household.

President George W Bush backs Israeli plan for strike on Iran :: TimesOnline

President George W Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official.

Despite the opposition of his own generals and widespread scepticism that America is ready to risk the military, political and economic consequences of an airborne strike on Iran, the president has given an “amber light” to an Israeli plan to attack Iran’s main nuclear sites with long-range bombing sorties, the official told The Sunday Times.

The Environmentalists and Greens want control not a healthier planet! By Dr. Laurie Roth

America is a shining light on a hill and has historically been a beacon of hope to many countries over the decades. Even those countries that declared war against us and sought to destroy us, after we creamed them, we rebuilt and helped them back up, such as Germany and Japan. Currently, we are fighting an insidious and asymmetrical war with Islamic Radicals since their bold and brazen attack on us in 2001.

With or Without Nukes, Iran Is a Mortal Threat by Elan Journo

Imagine that your neighborhood is overrun by a gang. These brutes are wielding crowbars, knives, and pistols in a frenzied spree of home break-ins and mugging and murder. Now suppose the police reveal that their grand strategy for dealing with this gang is to block them from getting submachine guns--as if without such weapons, the gang would no longer bother people.

How Chuck Schumer Caused the Second Largest Bank Failure in US History By:Jerry Bowyer

Federal officials aren’t supposed to cause bank runs. In fact, much of the New Deal bank regulatory apparatus was set up for the purpose of eliminating such panics. When FDR was hit with a massive set of bank runs shortly after taking office, he gave an address in order to calm terrified depositors, assuring them that the banks would reopen shortly, and that everything would be fine. But Chuck Schumer is no FDR. He doesn’t stop bank runs; he starts them. Or, at least, has started one.

New T-shirt Line! “I Love Marxism - Obama ‘08″ :: THE CONSERVATIVE POST

We’ve developed our newest line of t-shirts, bumper stickers, baseball caps, etc. to call attention to how radically liberal… no socialist…. no borderline communist… Obama’s real agenda is.

Now, all the libs are gonna say… ‘oh there you go to the extremes again’… au contraire. I think Marxist is spot-on as a label of the Barack Obama agenda. ”From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs”is one of Marx’s most famous ideas, as it encapsulates his economic philosophy of ”progressive taxation” in just one simple sentence. If you ask most Obama supporters if they agree with this idea, I guarantee 9 out of 10 of them would say yes.

Liberal Heads Exploding Over Magazine Cover by Bill Dupray

Found this over on Daily Kos. As of 9:02 p.m. EDT there were 1201 Comments. The first few commenters think it has to be a hoax. Then Jake Tapper at ABC confirms, nope, it’s real.

The sophisticates at The New Yorker have come up with a cover that is sure to get the magazine a lot of attention. Negative attention. From their friends.

An illustration by Barry Blitt depicts Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and his wife Michelle in the Oval Office, revealing their “true” selves: Michelle is in full revolutionary garb, an enormous afro making her look like a millennial Angela Davis, holding an automatic weapon and wearing military pants.
