I received my stimulus check yesterday. It was $600 and I put it into my checking account and immediately paid a bill that accounted for half of it. THERE is so much theology in climate change it makes your head spin. The Rudd Government's green paper gives me modest encouragement that it is going to try not to damage the economy excessively in responding to alleged global warming. I am not a global warming denier. But I am, like Catholic Archbishop of Sydney George Pell, a modest sceptic, open to evidence.
There isn't all that much evidence around. Anyone who can base a policy on a computer model of something as complex as the global environment in 40 years is taking a much greater leap of faith than the World Youth Day pilgrims.

Joe Lieberman is enemy number one in the Democratic Party, at least among the netroot base which now appears to pull the strings. The netroots rounded up more than 45,000 signatures on a petition to strip him of his position as chair of Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees. As Robert Novak reported, Harry Reid is mulling over whether to kick Lieberman out of the Democratic caucus entirely if he speaks at the Republican convention on John McCain’s behalf.

Australian doctors have published in a medical journal the case of a 17-year old held for observation, suffering the first observed case of “climate change delusion phenomenon” (CCD). It seems that he suffered from fears that “due to climate change, his own water consumption could lead to days to the deaths of millions of people through exhaustion of water supplies”. On Sunday CNN aired an interview Barack Obama recently gave to Fareed Zakaria, in which the candidate expressed the opinion that Islamic jihad is a result of U.S. foreign policy failure. This is, of course, an assumption that he shares with virtually everyone of any influence in both parties. It is conventional wisdom that the United States, or the West in general, can make the global jihad problem go away by doing something that is not being done now, or by stopping doing something else. The possibility that the jihad might have arisen not as a reaction to actions of America and the West -- and cannot be ended by our actions, either, with the possible exception of overwhelming military and cultural force -- never seems to occur to anyone.

You know Barack Obama's campaign is getting into trouble when even the Associated Press notices that it has become something of a joke. Following up on the blogosphere, the AP noted today that Obama's web site has airbrushed his former opposition to the "surge" in Iraq:
Barack Obama's aides have removed criticism of President Bush's increase of troops to Iraq from the campaign Web site, part of an effort to update the Democrat's written war plan to reflect changing conditions.
One could put that differently, of course: now that Obama's position has definitively been proved wrong, he is trying to slink away without anyone noticing. But the AP does a decent job of putting Obama's about-face in context:

Sunday, author of Zoom and Economist reporter, Vijay Vaitheeswaran told the nation’s governors that pampered oil companies R&D budget is a meager 1/3% compared to 15% of a technology company. Why so? Because under the current protected conditions they are doing fine and see no reason to change. They are not sure that there is a real energy shortage and, therefore, they worry that the moment their investment in new technologies is going to bear fruit, the Saudis will pull the rug from under them by flooding the market with cheap oil in the manner they did in the Eighties and earlier this decade. I heard a similar assessment from a top Exxon officials a couple of years ago. Apparently, oil executives see little reason to change their minds.

Great story from NPR this week about the freakishly high number of American presidents who are left-handed. If you add in Obama/McCain (both of whom are lefties), five of the seven most recent U.S. presidents will be left-handed (as of January, 2009).
This is astounding when you consider that left-handers appear in the population at the rate of only about 10-15%. So, statistically, one would expect to have a left-handed president only about once per half-century.

Barack Obama has a solution to his lack of accomplishment and experience: pad his resume. If resume fraud were a crime, Obama would be looking at fifteen to life. And it is not just an isolated incident or two. He is a repeat offender.
Obama started early. Even the New York Times acknowledges that in his book Dreams From My Father Obama accomplished little as a “community organizer.” (”It is clear that the benefit of those years to Mr. Obama dwarfs what he accomplished.”) But he did manage to steal credit for asbestos testing and removal in the Altgeld Gardens, a public housing project in Chicago. Barack Obama tells "The Race" that U.S. law enforcement officers are terrorists and that communities that enforce immigration laws are vigilantes. But then, that's exactly what La Raza believes.
Obama, the "post-racial" candidate, pandered Sunday to a group of Hispanic activists that calls itself "The Race." The only thing that was missing at the convention of the National Council of La Raza was his wearing a Mexican flag lapel pin.

Recent comments by former Texas Senator Phil Gramm regarding the state of the U.S. economy have evoked a storm of criticisms and even a denunciation from Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain to whom Gramm has been acting as an ecomomic advisor. The problem began when Gramm, during an interview with Washington Times, said that the country was not in a true recession but a "mental recession." He also said, "We have sort of become a nation of whiners" and "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline."

Reader Tim C. in Tucscon sent me an e-mail about some completely unhinged open-borders activists who mobbed a book event for Sheriff Joe Arpaio. A group of young pro-illegal alien protesters repeatedly beats an effigy of Arpaio as Isabel Garcia–local reconquistadora and an official from the Pima County legal defender’s office–eggs them on. She then parades around with the effigy’s head as onlookers cheer and hoist up the rest of the battered body.

For months, many of America's spies could not do their jobs: the legal authority they need to effectively monitor the communications of foreign terrorists operating on foreign soil had expired. Critical intelligence was being lost - as non-partisan professionals attested and as was confirmed by expert lawmakers, including not just Republican hawks but also several leading Democrats (e.g. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller and moderate House "Blue Dog" Democrats).
But MoveOn.org, the ACLU and their allies in the House (in particular House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) blocked a congressional vote on new legislation that would have restored the authority the intelligence agencies had lost. Fact: In this century a global cooling has set in. In 2008 most of the northern hemisphere, except for Western Europe, is coming out of what most scientists say has been the harshest winter in decades.

There has been a great deal of press lately about how Barack Obama isn't quite the same person who ran an impressive primary campaign, overcoming a strong challenge by Hillary Clinton, to win enough delegates for the nomination. I doubt I need to recount all of these items, but suffice it to say that these were the seeds to my withdrawing away from supporting his candidacy. I am not about to support someone who doesn't mean what he says and shifts important positions for political advantage. Such a person doesn't display integrity, and similar actions on the part of Hillary Clinton during the primary prevented me from seriously considering supporting her candidacy.

Over the past few years, I have had the occasional run-in with a biology professor who teaches at one of the University of Minnesota's outstate campuses. This professor, one Paul Zachary Myers, happens to be an outspoken atheist as well as a vehement proselytizer of St. Darwin of the Galapagos. His apparent ambition is to follow Richard Dawkins's spiritual evolution from science professor to professional propagandist of the one true unfaith. Unlike Dawkins, however, Myers's ability to construct a rational and coherent case is not merely limited; it is virtually nonexistent. When criticizing, he is seldom able to present anything more sophisticated than the standard ad hominem attack.

In his book, Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers: The Untold Story of Nazi Racial Laws and Men of Jewish Descent in the German Military (University Press of Kansas, 2002) , author Bryan Mark Rigg, tells us that as many as 150,000 Jews and “partial-Jews” served in Hitler’s Wehrmacht.
Rigg tells us that “exemptions” were made in order to allow a soldier to stay in the military or to spare a soldier’s parent, spouse, or other relative from incarceration and the gas chambers. This week, Iranian Islamist Mahmud Ahmadi-Nejad tested his new ballistic missile, the Shahab-3—range 1,250 miles. Next door in Iraq, 550 metric tons of “yellowcake” uranium ore, which Saddam intended to weaponize for use in his non-existent WMD program, were removed from Tuwaitha. (That’s enough for more than 100 medium-sized nuclear boomers.) The subsiding furor over the incident evidenced once again that the mainstream media loves the Democratic frontrunner in an unsavory fashion. It also illuminates the way in which Obama’s past clashes resoundingly with who he claims to be. To our elites, forgiveness is the perpetual rule in regards to the Illinois senator. Jimmy Carter helped give birth to the virulent Shiite Islamism by forbidding the Shah of Iran to crush the bloodthirsty Ayatollah Khomeini and his band of rabid Islamists. Now, Mr. Obama intends to confer legitimacy on the illegitimate child, the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Jimmy Carter, the self-appointed touring ambassador of bad-mouthing America must be rejoicing in the prospect of Mr. Obama's presidency. Mr. Obama holds the promise of not only carrying on the Carterian misguided policies, but taking them to their very ruinous end.

Once again this year, the National Right to Life convention is partly a reunion of veterans from battles past and partly a youth rally of those recruited for the battles to come. And that is just what it should be. The pro-life movement that began in the 20th century laid the foundation for the pro-life movement of the 21st century. We have been at this a long time, and we are just getting started. All that has been and all that will be is prelude to, and anticipation of, an indomitable hope.

How did we get where we are? President George W Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official.

Federal officials aren’t supposed to cause bank runs. In fact, much of the New Deal bank regulatory apparatus was set up for the purpose of eliminating such panics. When FDR was hit with a massive set of bank runs shortly after taking office, he gave an address in order to calm terrified depositors, assuring them that the banks would reopen shortly, and that everything would be fine. But Chuck Schumer is no FDR. He doesn’t stop bank runs; he starts them. Or, at least, has started one.
