The Importance of Intellectual Patrimony for Young Conservatives By Luke C. Sheahan

A couple weeks ago at Fado in DC I shared a meal and a few beers with The Washington Times assistant national editor Robert Stacy McCain and a number of other young conservative activists, including the notable Nathanael Blake and Francisco Gonzalez. McCain mentioned an article he had recently edited on young conservatives’ lack of understanding regarding the “philosophical underpinnings” of their ideas and asked my opinion. I responded with a story from college which McCain related on the Washington Times blog Fishwrap. Once in attendance at a College Republican meeting where they were discussing founding narrowly focused student groups. One suggestion for a group focused on economic issues was the “College Capitalists.” I suggested a more highbrow name such as the “Milton Friedman Society” or the “Friedrich Hayek Society.” I received blank stares; they had no idea who I was talking about.
