Al Qaida mounts its own desperate surge to prompt early U.S. withdrawal :: World Tribune
Al Qaida has bolstered its network in Iraq in an effort to prompt an early U.S. withdrawal.
The U.S. military has determined that Al Qaida increased recruitment of foreign fighters and nationals in Iraq. The military has assessed that Al Qaida sought a surge in attacks to ensure that the Bush administration withdraws U.S. troops from Iraq in 2008.
"We have seen in the last six weeks indications that Al Qaida has actually sent more people into Iraq to try to shore up the Al Qaida network in Iraq," Brig. Gen. Kevin Bergner, deputy chief of staff for strategic effects in Multinational Force-Iraq, said.
