On the trail of a war hero by Greg Sheridan
JOHN McCain is the most interesting person to run for the US presidency in the past 100 years, at least sinceTheodore Roosevelt. I discovered this during the first part of the presidential primaries, which I observed from the Melbourne suburbs.
A few weeks ago a friend lent me McCain's memoir, Faith of My Fathers, first published in 1999. I'm surprised McCain's book has been so little remarked during this campaign. I suppose being a decade old it has been absorbed into the American political culture. The memoir deals not only with McCain's own life but with those of his father and grandfather, both of whom were admirals in the US navy.
