Righting the Religious Left's Crusade By Mark D. Tooley
For 17 years, thousands of leftist political and religious activists have demonstrated outside the gates of Ft. Benning, Georgia against the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), formerly called School of the Americas. Its angry critics call it "School of the Assassins." In their mythology, the school is an instrument of U.S. imperialism in the Western Hemisphere, teaching Latin militaries in the techniques of torture and assassination so as more effectively to suppress the people.
The main organizer of the endless demonstrations is leftist Maryknoll priest Roy Bourgeois, who cut his teeth advocating on behalf of Central American Marxist insurgencies in the 1980's. But the protests, always culminating in arrests, are ecumenically populated by aging activists from many denominations.
