What Do Americans Know About Obama’s ‘Black Liberation’ Theology? By Nicholas M. Guariglia
Several months ago author Christopher Hitchens, on the heels of his magnum opus God is Not Great, wrote an opinion piece suggesting it was not out of line to question former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith. Besides some of the more peculiar aspects of the Mormon doctrine –– that whole business about Garden of Eden being in Missouri –– there were more pressing matters, Hitchens felt, which required an explanation on behalf of Governor Romney. The primary concern went as follows:
1 comment:
I do not care to go through and detail all of the fallacious statements made by Mr. Guariglia regarding Mitt Romney's religion however three exampes stand out.
(1) The word "handsome" is used in quotes indicating an origin from another source. As used here it can really only indicate a Book of Mormon source. I cannot find any place where "handsome" is ever mentioned at any point in the entire Book of Mormon. You put quotes around it so I assumed you surely must be quoting it from the Book of Mormon, but alas it is nowhere to be found. The only place in LDS scripture that the term "handsome" is used is in the King James Version of the Bible in 1 Kings 1:6 and Hebrews 11:23 neither of which in any way relates to the Nephite people of the Book of Mormon.
(2) Where on earth did the characterization of the "Lamanites" as recluse? That term makes no sense in the context of the Book of Mormon. They were not "recluse" but rather a separate group of people from the Nephites (kind of like two nations) that at times had wars and at other times got along quite well. The term "recluse" is also not found at any place in the Book of Mormon or any other LDS Scripture.
(3) The following phrase from the piece is particularly peculiar:
"Or that a third faction, who mistakenly remained neutral between God and Satan, was to be punished by God for their impartiality –– "and hence the Negro or African race," as the dogma goes?"
What does this even mean? I have read the Book of Mormon dozens of times in it's entirety and this does not make any sense whatsoever in the context of the Book of Mormon. What "third faction"? If anyone had taken the time to read or at least read about the Book of Mormon they would quickly realize that this is complete incoherent nonsense. First of all, never at anytime in the Book of Mormon are the "Negro or African Race," ever mentioned. The Book of Mormon is about a people who lived anciently on the American Continent (the Ancestors of the North and South American Indians). These people are not of the "African race" and thus, are not mentioned at all.
