University Of Delaware: The Term Racist “Applies To All White People”

The University of Delaware is going to suffer some well deserved embarrassment over it’s racist student “orientation” program, which teaches kids, among other things, that only white people can be racists and people of color cannot by definition be racist.

Wow, this video really did make my blood boil. Just not the way you though it would. While I do agree that some of the activities, the way they were described, were inappropriate (making people reveal their sexual orientation), what I took away was that these students were actually upset at the university for acknowledging that there are forces in our society that oppress minorities. Certainly, I can see the benefit of opening this conversation when I'm about to live with a group of strangers all from different backgrounds with different experiences. While the program certainly could have been improved by creating a safe space in which students could share and discussing differing opinions, there is a real incentive for creating in a freshman dormitory a environment that is aware of the forces that create racial conflict. As an African American with a white roommate as a freshman, the fact that me and my roommate were able to talk about race issues openly and honestly, even when we didn't agree, was a big plus that helped us to get along overall. I see no problem in trying to create this type of environment for an entire dormitory, and being able to discuss things like white privilege is an important part of this.

When white people argue that talking about white privilege is akin to calling all whites racist, they reveal their own personal insecurities on the topic.
